When a Honda HR-V stops running: problems by year and selling it

Yes, an HR-V with a failed CVT, a dead engine or crash damage can be sold as it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, pickup is free anywhere in the US, and nothing needs to come off the car beforehand.

On a 2016-2020, check one thing first. Honda extended the CVT warranty on those cars to seven years or 150,000 miles because the drive belt can wear out early, and the repair under that program can be a new transmission. If your car still qualifies, that changes the math. The program, the recalls and the complaint counts follow.

Complaints are owner reports filed with NHTSA, counted from its files on October 10, 2026. Because fuel pump recall 23V858 sits in both rows, the HR-V recall column totals 14 while there are 13 campaigns.

The first HR-V went on sale in May 2015 as a 2016 model, built alongside the Fit. In September 2019 Honda said it would shift HR-V output from its Guadalajara plant and put all of it at Celaya from early 2020. The 2019 refresh added Sport and Touring trims. The 2023 is a different car: larger engine, new CVT, no manual.

Problems on the 2016-2022 cars

The CVT drive belt

Power train is the biggest complaint category on the 2016 (65 of 240) and the 2017 (26 of 123). Honda's bulletin 21-047, first issued April 27, 2021, gives 2016-2020 CVT models coverage for 7 years from the original purchase or 150,000 miles, citing "premature belt deterioration."

The June 2021 owner letter explains the risk. The old software did not watch internal fluid pressure closely enough to catch an early belt failure, and Honda wrote that "this can possibly cause the vehicle not to move when accelerating." The dealer first loads new software (bulletin 21-046) and inspects the transmission; if the belt fails that check, the fix is a replacement CVT. Version 5 of the bulletin notes that the belt is now monitored by the car's diagnostics, under code P271E. Version 6, dated February 19, 2025, still lists every 2016-2020 CVT car, front- or all-wheel drive, and the coverage moves with the car to later owners.

The seven years count from the first sale. Most 2016-2018 cars are past it now. A 2019 or 2020 first sold after early October 2019 is still inside, if it has fewer than 150,000 miles. One condition applies to every car: "The product update must be completed before the extended warranty coverage will take effect." If the software was never loaded, have a dealer do that first.

Fuel pumps that quit

Fuel system is the second-largest category on the 2018 (27), 2019 (34) and 2020 (14). Three recalls touch it:

  • 20V314 (May 2020): 135,995 vehicles, 2018-2019 HR-Vs among them. In these HR-Vs, the low-pressure pump in the tank can quit and leave the engine stalling while driving. Dealers replace the pump assembly.
  • 21V215 (March 2021): the 2019 HR-V, for low-density pump impellers that crack, swell with fuel and jam.
  • 23V858 (December 2023): 2018-2020 HR-Vs in Honda's report, for the same impeller defect. A stuck pump means a no-start or a stall.

Brakes, cameras and air bag sensors

Recall 18V777 bled the brakes on 2016 and 2018-2019 HR-Vs whose rear caliper pistons had too little coating, which let gas pockets form and weakened braking. Recall 23V046 addressed 2019-2022 cars whose rearview camera image might not show after a key start; 24V384 then replaced that remedy, and cars already fixed under the first campaign need the new repair too.

Recall 24V064 covers the 2020-2022. The weight sensor in the front passenger seat can crack and short out, which could set off an air bag at the wrong time. Recall 26V332 (May 2026) widened the problem to 2019-2021 HR-Vs and other Hondas. Air bags lead the 2021's complaints, 19 of 63.

Problems on the 2023 and newer cars

Front wipers

No HR-V draws more complaints than the 2023, at 686. Of those, 298 sit under visibility/wiper and 78 more under visibility. A 2025 Honda dealer message filed with NHTSA says Honda is investigating front wiper motors that stop working on 2023-2026 HR-Vs and CR-Vs and on 2022-2026 Civics, sometimes with the blades parked out of line. Honda asked dealers to report only cars with both front wipers dead every time and no collision damage. We found no recall for it.

Hard steering

Recall 24V744 (October 2024) covers 1,693,199 vehicles, 2023-2025 HR-Vs included. The steering gearbox may have been built wrong, adding internal friction that makes the car hard to steer. Dealers replace the worm gear spring and add or spread grease. Steering is the top category on the 2024 (47 of 109) and the 2025 (14 of 46).

Seats and belts

Recall 23V782 covers 2023-2024 cars whose front seat belt pretensioners may lack a rivet, so the belt won't hold properly in a crash. Two small campaigns, 24V859 and 26V054, cover 2024 cars whose driver's seat cushion frame may not have been tightened.

Complaints and recalls for each model year

Counted from NHTSA's files on October 10, 2026. A campaign counts in each model year it names. NHTSA's file lists 23V858 under the 2023 too, though the December 2023 defect report we read names 2018-2020 cars.

Is it worth fixing?

Ask the shop for a written HR-V repair price, then check what a working one like yours sells for. When the fix would cost most of that, you come out ahead selling the HR-V unrepaired. Before you get that far:

  1. Check open recalls with your VIN at NHTSA's lookup. Recall work is done by Honda dealers.
  2. CVT gone on a 2016-2020? Have the dealer run the VIN for the 21-047 extension before you pay anyone else. Out of coverage, our CVT failure guide explains the symptoms and the choices.
  3. Stalls or won't start on a 2018-2020? The three fuel pump recalls come first.
  4. Steering heavy on a 2023-2025? That is recall 24V744's territory.

If it won't start at all, selling a non-running car walks through the basics, and what a junk car is worth explains what moves an offer.

How the sale works

  1. Collect the facts: VIN, mileage, the problem in a sentence, and whether it rolls in Neutral.
  2. Get your offer online, or by phone at (877) 421-6008.
  3. Point us to the car, whether it's on the street, in a parking garage or at a repair shop. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Don't pull parts off your HR-V. Mention anything already missing, since the offer is based on what's on it.
  5. When the truck arrives, have the signed title, a photo ID and the keys. State rules decide what happens to the plates and registration; see after you sell, or the no-title guide if the title is lost.

Questions people ask

Which HR-V model year has the most complaints?
The 2023, which owners reported to NHTSA 686 times up to October 10, 2026. Of those, 298 fall under the visibility/wiper category. The 2016 is next with 240, then the 2019 with 236 and the 2018 with 158.
Is my HR-V's CVT still under Honda's extended warranty?
It depends on the year and the date it was first sold. On a 2016-2020 HR-V, Honda backs the CVT for 7 years from first sale or 150,000 miles, whichever hits first. A second or third owner keeps that coverage too. Today that leaves mainly 2019 and 2020 cars first sold after early October 2019. The coverage only takes effect once a dealer has loaded Honda's CVT software update. A Honda dealer can check the VIN.
My HR-V revs but won't move. Is that the belt?
It can be. In a 2021 notice to owners, Honda said earlier CVT software might not catch a belt starting to fail, and the car could then refuse to move when you press the gas. Only a diagnosis settles it. If the car is outside the extension and the quote is too high, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
Have the 2023 HR-V wiper failures been recalled?
Not in our October 10, 2026 pull of NHTSA's recall file. A 2025 Honda dealer message filed with NHTSA says Honda is investigating front wiper motors that stop working on 2023-2026 HR-Vs. Steering gearbox recall 24V744 does cover 2023-2025 cars.
Do I have to fix the HR-V before I sell it?
No. You sell the whole car as it sits, broken transmission and all. Just describe what is wrong and whether it rolls when you ask for an offer.
