Selling an old Honda Prelude that no longer runs

The newest old-style Prelude is a 2001, so every one is now at least 25 years old. If yours has a dead engine, a gearbox that quit, or has simply sat too long, you can sell it as it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Honda built the Prelude at Sayama, Japan, until October 2001, then brought the name back for 2026 as a hybrid coupe made at Yorii. For the old cars NHTSA holds just 365 complaints and 10 recall campaigns, so the weak spots are easy to list.

The Prelude, generation by generation

Our counts use NHTSA's records as downloaded on October 10, 2026. A campaign that spans two generations is counted in each.

What the recalls fixed

1984-1991

Fuel pipes. Recall 92V028 covers 1984-1987 Preludes whose plastic-coated fuel filler and breather pipes can trap salt water, corrode and leak fuel or vapor.

Belt buckles. Recall 95V103 says the "front safety belt buckle release buttons can break" on 1986-1991 cars; they're the red ones marked PRESS. The campaign row lists 3,700,000 vehicles; it covered the Accord too.

The 1988. It has six campaigns, more than any other Prelude year. A power steering supply hose could leak at its clamp, spraying fluid on the hot exhaust manifold and risking an underhood fire (88V059). An accelerator pedal stopper could bend and hold the pedal down (89V097). Seeping coolant could leave residue on the throttle valve and slow the return to idle (87V122). Brackets anchoring the front seats might fall short of a federal standard, so dealers added reinforcing plates (89V093). The sixth fixed an owner's manual.

1992-2001

Ball joints. On 1996-1998 cars, the front lower ball joints can wear out and separate, and then the front suspension collapses (99V069).

Ignition. High current at start-up can wear the ignition switch contacts on 1997-1999 cars until the engine stalls with no warning (02V120). On 1997-2001 cars, the key interlock may let the key come out without the car in Park (05V025).

Power train. It's the most-named system on the 1997 (38 of 66 complaints) and the 1998 (28 of 69). We found no recall or extended warranty behind it in Honda's NHTSA filings, so we don't name a cause. If yours won't shift or won't move, our bad transmission guide covers the choices.

Complaints and recalls by year

As of October 10, 2026. Since one recall can apply to several years, those numbers overlap and sum past 10. Years with only a handful of complaints are grouped. We left NHTSA's unknown-or-other category out of the last column.

Fix it, or sell it?

It comes down to the repair bill and what a running Prelude like yours sells for where you live. Get the quote in writing, then compare. A few things to check first:

  • Open recalls. Look the VIN up on NHTSA's recall site. The ignition and interlock fixes are worth confirming on any 1997-2001.
  • How long it has sat. Old fuel, a flat battery and seized brakes can make a parked car seem worse than it is. Our car sitting for years guide walks through it.
  • Parting it out yourself. Pulling an engine or transmission to sell on its own takes tools, space and time. Read part it out or sell it whole before you start.

The 2026 Prelude

Honda's new Prelude is a hybrid liftback coupe. A 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine works with two electric motors for 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft combined. There's no traditional transmission or CVT: the traction motor drives the wheels through a fixed ratio, and "S+ Shift" imitates gear changes. Production at Yorii began in August 2025, and the car reached North America that November. A wrecked or flooded one sells whole the same way an old one does.

Selling your Prelude

Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008. Give the year, the trim if you know it (Si, VTEC, Type SH), the mileage, whether it's a manual or an automatic, and what's wrong. Say where it sits: a garage, a side yard, a storage lot. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Leave the car complete. If the engine or wheels are already off, mention it, since that changes the offer. Titles on cars this old do go missing; if yours has, start with our no-title guide. Comparing other Hondas? See the Accord, S2000 and del Sol.

Questions people ask

Which Prelude years have the most complaints to NHTSA?
The 1998, with 69, and the 1997, with 66. On both, the power train is named most: 38 of the 1997's complaints and 28 of the 1998's. The 1988 comes next with 35. No other year passes 31.
Is the 2026 Prelude part of these numbers?
No. Our pull of NHTSA's files has complaints only through the 2001 model year and no Prelude recalls after 2005. That doesn't prove the new hybrid has none; check its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
The key comes out of my 1997-2001 Prelude when it isn't in Park. Is that a recall?
Yes, recall 05V025 covers that. Honda found the key interlock on 1997-2001 Preludes may let the key be removed without shifting to Park, so the car could roll away. Look the VIN up to see whether the repair was ever done.
Do you buy a Prelude that has been parked for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, including ones that have sat with flat tires and a dead battery. Say roughly when it last ran and if the wheels turn, and the truck comes to where it is.
