Honda Accord: the problem years, and selling one that won't run
An Accord that overheats, slips out of gear or shows a dash full of warning lights can be sold the way it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

First, check what Honda may still pay for. Several Accord extensions run 10 years or more, and the head gasket one dates from August 2026.
Honda coverage that may still apply
Head gaskets, 2018-2026. Honda's bulletin of August 26, 2026 stretches coverage on the head gasket of certain 2018-2026 Accords and Accord Hybrids "to 10 years from the original date of purchase or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first." On 2018-2022 gas cars, the dealer bulletins cover only the 1.5 turbo, with CVT or manual; the 2.0 turbo has no bulletin on that list. The warning signs it lists are overheating, coolant loss, misfire and stored codes P0300 through P0304. An Accord already past that age gets a 6-month grace period from the date Honda notifies the owner. Honda planned to start those notices in early October 2026.
Steering, 2013-2014. Bulletin 15-056 covers the electric power steering torque sensor for 13 years from purchase with no mileage cap, when the car logs code 53-01 or 53-02.
Air conditioning, 2018-2020. Every 2018-2020 Accord carries 10 years with unlimited miles on the A/C condenser. Honda's July 2021 owner letter says the part was not made to specification, so tiny corrosion holes let refrigerant leak out. Later owners are covered too.
Lights and a torque converter, 2016-2017. LED daytime running lights on 2016-2017 Accords have 10 years with unlimited miles, because their heat can damage the lens. A 2017 V6 automatic (the bulletin lists EX-L V6 and TRG V6) that stores code P0741 and flashes D on the dash has 10 years or 150,000 miles on the torque converter.
Ten generations, and the trouble in each
Figures here were tallied from NHTSA's complaint and recall downloads of October 10, 2026. When one recall reaches across a redesign, it counts in both rows.
| Generation | Model years | Engines | What fills the file | Complaints / recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2nd to 5th | 1984-1997 | 1.6 to 2.2 fours; a 2.7 V6 in 1994-1997 | Seat belts, then air bags | 3,028 / 13 |
| 6th | 1998-2002 | 2.3 four or 3.0 V6 | Ignition switches, air bags, transmissions | 5,490 / 17 |
| 7th | 2003-2007 | 2.4 four, 3.0 V6, hybrid V6 | Automatic transmission failures, inflators | 4,646 / 22 |
| 8th | 2008-2012 | 2.4 four, 3.5 V6 | Brake complaints, oil burning, V6 misfires | 3,577 / 15 |
| 9th | 2013-2017 | 2.4 four with CVT, 3.5 V6, hybrids | Steering, a battery sensor, drive shafts | 4,277 / 10 |
| 10th | 2018-2022 | 1.5 and 2.0 turbos, hybrid | Engine complaints, body control software | 3,787 / 11 |
| 11th | 2023-2026 | 1.5 turbo or 2.0 hybrid | Seat belt, fuel pump and hybrid recalls | 570 / 8 |
1984-1997: parts that age
These years have few complaints, and the recalls deal with wear. Recall 95V103 says the red front belt buckle buttons on 1986-1991 cars can break, letting bits fall inside so the buckle misbehaves; it asked owners to check both buttons for breaks or cracks. The 1995 is the air bag year: 199 of its 543 complaints name air bags, and recall 96V217 says its control unit could fire the bag unexpectedly. On 1995-1997 four-cylinder cars other than the DX, recall 98V231 fixes an A/C wiring harness that could rub through, short and start a fire under the hood.
1998-2002: switches and inflators
Every year here passes 900 complaints. Recall 02V120 says ignition switch contacts on 1997-1999 Accords can degrade and stall the engine with no warning. Recall 03V423 covers 1998-1999 keys that come out when the car isn't in Park. Air bags lead the 2000 and 2001, with 418 and 390 complaints, and under recall 20V026 dealers inspect 1998-2000 driver inflators, which can rupture, and replace them if necessary.
The serious case is the 2001-2002. NHTSA's February 3, 2023 alert lists those years among cars with Takata Alpha driver inflators and repeats Honda's warning not to drive one until it's repaired. About 8,200 Alpha-equipped Honda and Acura vehicles were still on the road then.
2003-2007: the five-speed automatic
The 2003 has 1,987 complaints, second only to the 2018, and 880 name the power train. Recall 04V176 dealt with heat between the second gears on 2003-2004 cars, which could break teeth and lock the transmission. A California class settlement over the five-speed automatic also named 2003-2004 Accord V6 cars.
Other recalls in this run: a power steering hose on 2003-2007 V6 cars that can drip onto the hot catalytic converter (12V222), a 2005 fuel pump relay that can stall the engine (07V097), and a 2005-2010 transmission bearing whose pieces can jam the parking pawl (11V395).
2008-2012: oil and brakes
The 2008 drew 1,520 complaints, 438 of them about the hydraulic brakes. We found no brake recall or extension in Honda's NHTSA filings, so we don't guess at a cause.
Oil is the better-documented story. Bulletin 12-087 extended piston and ring coverage on 2008-2011 four-cylinder cars to 8 years or 125,000 miles for sticking rings and high oil use. Bulletin 13-078, from the Soto class-action settlement, gave 2008-2012 V6 automatics with misfire codes eight years with unlimited miles. Honda's stated cause: piston rings on some cylinders rotate into line and foul the spark plugs. Eight years from the first sale has passed on nearly all of these cars. Recall 16V056 also covers 2008-2010 air bag control units that can corrode and fail.
2013-2017: steering and drive shafts
Steering (448) and electrical (341) top the 2013's 1,433 complaints. Recall 17V418 replaces a battery sensor on 2013-2016 cars that can let water in, short out and catch fire. On 2013-2015 four-cylinder CVT cars sold or registered in listed northern states, a drive shaft can snap, cutting drive power or letting the car roll (20V769). Recall 25V422 added 72,256 more 2013 cars in 2025.
2018-2022: the busiest year on file
The 2018 has 2,005 complaints, more than any Accord year, and 450 name the engine. We found no Honda document naming a cause for those. If the car has the 1.5 turbo or is a Hybrid, check the head gasket extension above first. Recalls cover a body control module error on 2018-2020 cars that can knock out wipers, defroster, camera and lights (20V771), and fuel pump impellers on 2018-2020 Accords and 2017-2020 Hybrids that can deform, so the engine won't start or stalls (23V-858).
2023-2026: eight recalls so far
NHTSA's file links eight campaigns to these years. Four of them: front belt pretensioners missing a rivet (23V782), a high-pressure fuel pump that may split and let fuel escape (24V763), hybrid control software that can reset and cut drive power on 2023-2025 Hybrids (25V785), and, on 2023-2026 Hybrids, a tire repair kit bottle whose cap can blow off (26V366). The file also lists the 2023 under 23V858, the fuel pump impeller recall above. The other three are small. 23V588 replaces the e-CVT on some 2023 Hybrids, since it may have been built wrong and can lose drive power; the campaign counts 19 vehicles, CR-V Hybrids included. In 24V859 and 26V054, dealers replace a driver's seat cushion frame that may not have been tightened; those campaigns count 121 and 32 vehicles, and both also cover other Honda and Acura models.
Complaints and recalls for each model year
Figures as of October 10, 2026. Because one campaign can cover a run of model years, the recall figures overlap and total more than 84. "Named most" ignores NHTSA's unknown-or-other category. The thin early years are grouped.

Pay for the repair, or sell the Accord as is?
Set the repair quote beside what the same Accord fetches once it runs. If the quote comes close, selling wins. Check these first:
- Recalls. Enter the VIN at NHTSA's recall search, then ask a Honda dealer about extensions, which that search doesn't show.
- Overheating or losing coolant on a 2018 or newer 1.5 turbo or Hybrid? The head gasket coverage comes before any quote.
- Slipping or locked automatic? See the bad transmission guide.
- Knocking, smoke or heavy oil use? Read blown engine before paying for a rebuild.
- Cranks but won't start on a 2018-2020? Rule out the fuel pump recall first.
How selling a whole Accord works
- Write down the VIN, the mileage on the odometer, what broke, and whether the car can be pushed.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it's parked: a driveway, an apartment lot, a shop's back row. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it complete. If the battery, wheels or converter are already gone, say so, since that changes the offer.
- Keep the title and your license handy for the driver. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.

Questions people ask
- Which Accord years drew the most NHTSA complaints?
- Counting to October 10, 2026, the 2018 tops the list at 2,005. The 2003 (1,987), 2008 (1,520), 2013 (1,433) and 1998 (1,200) follow. On the 2018 the engine is named most; on the 2003 it's the power train, NHTSA's label for the transmission and driveline.
- Does Honda's new head gasket extension cover my Accord?
- It may, if it's a 2018 through 2026. For 2018-2022, Honda's dealer bulletins name the 1.5 turbo (CVT or manual) and the Hybrid; none of them lists the 2.0 turbo. Honda's August 26, 2026 bulletin covers the head gasket for a decade from the first sale, or up to 150,000 miles if that comes sooner. An older car gets a six-month grace period counted from Honda's notice to its owner, and Honda meant to begin those notices in early October 2026. A Honda dealer can confirm it from the VIN.
- The power steering warning is on in my 2013 or 2014 Accord. Is that covered?
- Possibly. Honda bulletin 15-056 covers the electric power steering torque sensor of 2013-2014 Accords for "13 years from the original date of purchase with no mileage limit" when the car stores code 53-01 or 53-02. For a 2014 bought new in 2014, that runs into 2027.
- What if my Accord has an unrepaired Do Not Drive inflator?
- Leave it parked and note the unrepaired inflator in your request. Pickup is free anywhere in the US, so the car rides on the truck instead of being driven. NHTSA's February 2023 alert named 2001-2002 Accords among the cars with Takata Alpha driver inflators that owners should not drive until repaired. If you'd rather fix it, recall 15V320 replaces driver inflators on 2001-2007 Accords free at a Honda dealer.
- Should I strip parts off the Accord before selling it?
- No. Selling it complete is the point: you sell the whole car as it sits, wheels, battery and catalytic converter included. Already removed something? Note it in your request.
