Selling a junk or broken Hyundai Veracruz
Hyundai recalled the same Veracruz oil leak twice. In 2014, recall 14V415 went after oil leaking from the front cylinder bank on certain 2007-2012 models built from December 26, 2006, through July 24, 2012. Six years later, recall 20V705 called back certain SUVs that had been recalled under 14V415, because oil may leak from the front cylinder bank cover gasket.

The oil leak, the electrics and the rest
Per Wikipedia, it had a 3.8-liter Lambda V6 petrol engine (plus a 3.0-liter diesel V6), a 6-speed automatic, front- or four-wheel drive, and was built in Ulsan, South Korea. It says Hyundai dropped the Veracruz outside South Korea on November 15, 2011, though the EPA still lists 2012 models.
NHTSA files engine complaints under two headings. "Engine and engine cooling" holds 135 complaints and "engine" holds 120, so together they make up 255 of the 661. The electrical system is close behind with 134. Separately, the 14V415 remedy had dealers inspect, repair or replace the alternator along with the front valve cover gasket; NHTSA's complaint counts don't say how many of those 134 relate to it. Both oil-leak campaigns name only the Veracruz, at 61,122 and 60,097 vehicles.
2007-2008: the busiest years
These two years hold 375 complaints, and the 2008 alone has 230. Its top parts are engine and cooling (43), electrical (39) and service brakes (33).
Three recalls reach these years beyond the oil leak. Recall 11V472 replaced the driver's air bag clock spring on 2007-2008 Veracruz SUVs built from December 26, 2006 through March 21, 2008. Its 205,233 vehicles include the Santa Fe. The stop lamp switch was recalled under 09V122 (2007-2008) and again under 13V113 (2008-2011). Those two campaigns ran across many Hyundai models, 532,633 and 1,712,336 vehicles in all.
2009-2012: fewer complaints, one park-outside recall
The 2009 has just 24 complaints. Counts rise again on the 2010 (91) and 2011 (106), where the electrical system leads with 31. Complaints that report a fire total 17 across all years, with 6 on the 2007, 5 on the 2010 and 4 on the 2012.
Recall 23V651 covers 2010-2012 Veracruz SUVs for the anti-lock brake control unit. Until a dealer fits a new ABS fuse, Hyundai's notice says to keep the SUV outdoors, at a distance from any building. That campaign's 1,649,478 vehicles span a long list of Hyundai models.
When new, the Veracruz did well in crash tests. Wikipedia notes five stars from NHTSA in frontal and side tests, and an IIHS Best Safety Pick for Veracruz SUVs built after August 2007.
Fix it or sell it?
Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall search first. If the 20V705 gasket check or the ABS fuse is still open, a Hyundai dealer does both for free. Selling with an open recall explains what to disclose if you skip it.
Past the recalls, it comes down to the repair quote against what a running Veracruz of that year would sell for. Engine and electrical are the two areas Veracruz owners report most. Our guides on electrical problems and a blown engine help you weigh each repair.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Figures: NHTSA owner complaints in the October 10, 2026 download. The 2012 Veracruz was the last one built, so its owners have had the shortest stretch to report anything. One campaign can reach as many as six model years here, which is why the recall column totals far above 6.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Recall campaigns | Top three parts named |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2007 | 145 | 3 | 6 | 4 | Engine 28; engine and cooling 25; electrical 24 |
| 2008 | 230 | 7 | 2 | 5 | Engine and cooling 43; electrical 39; service brakes 33 |
| 2009 | 24 | 0 | 0 | 3 | Electrical 5; engine and cooling 5; service brakes 3 |

Counting every Veracruz year, 58 complaints mention the SUV needing a tow.
Selling your Veracruz whole
- Have the VIN and mileage handy, plus a line on what's wrong: oil leak, no start, warning lights.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot and whether the SUV can be pushed. Home, curbside or a mechanic's lot, the truck comes to it.
- Sell the whole car as it sits. Keep the wheels and battery on, and flag any part that is already missing.
- Bring the title and keys at pickup. If the title is lost, see selling with no title; for plates and insurance, see after you sell.
