Selling a junk car in Huntley
If police tow an abandoned car more than seven years old in Huntley, state law lets it be junked after as little as 10 days. That is the Illinois rule for older abandoned cars. We couldn't find Huntley's code online, so this page is based on Illinois law. The village may have more rules on top. If you would rather decide the car's fate yourself, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Two deadlines after a tow
Illinois sorts unclaimed and abandoned cars by age.
| Car's age | What state law allows |
|---|---|
| 7 model years old or newer | Owner and lienholder have 30 days after notice to claim it. If they do not, a public auction sells it to licensed recyclers, rebuilders or scrap processors, or to the tow operator (625 ILCS 5/4-208) |
| More than 7 years old | The agency must keep it 10 days or longer while it looks for the owner. After that it may allow the car to be junked or salvaged (625 ILCS 5/4-209) |
Once that happens, the car is gone and you have nothing to sell.
What a village may require
Illinois lets each town decide whether to treat visible dead cars as a nuisance. Under 65 ILCS 5/11-40-3, a town can do that by ordinance for cars on public or private property "in view of the general public," fine owners, and send police to tow a car one week after notifying the owner. Under the statute, a Huntley car turns inoperable when it has lacked its engine, wheels or other key parts for a week or more, or when those are damaged or changed so badly it can't drive itself. Ordinary shop time does not count.
Because Huntley's ordinance was not available to us, call village hall if a notice shows up, and ask which section it cites and how many days it gives.
Failed the emissions test?
Huntley lies in Kane and McHenry counties, and both are on Illinois's emissions-test list. Huntley gas cars from 1996 onward start Illinois testing at four years old. Huntley drivers test in the month their plates renew. A car from an even model year tests in an even year, and an odd one in an odd year.
A car that keeps failing needs $1,176 or more in emissions repairs before a waiver, the amount set for applications starting Jan. 1, 2026, and fees for figuring out what is wrong are not counted. That figure is a legal test, and on an older car it can easily pass what the car is worth; see failed emissions.
A sticker that ran out long ago
Cars that sit tend to miss renewals. For a passenger car or light truck, Illinois law adds a single $20 late charge once a renewal comes in more than a month past its expiration date, and that is the whole penalty in the statute. It sets out no stacked fees for each missed year. More on old, parked cars in car sitting for years.
Title steps for an Illinois seller
Titles don't come from Kane or McHenry County. In Huntley, the Illinois Secretary of State handles titles, by mail via Springfield or at its own offices.
Sign and date the Assignment of Title section. Illinois's written steps for sellers include no notary. The buyer should leave with a dated bill of sale that states the price, and you should leave with their name and address and your plates. When the Huntley car is sold, get the Notice of Sale or a VSD 703 in the mail to Springfield at once. That ends your responsibility, though the buyer's title application is what changes ownership. A car headed for scrap can take the junking certificate route instead, which retires its title for good.
