Selling a junk or dead car in Erlanger
Erlanger's Section 104.02 sets no countdown for a dead car at home. Section 104.02(S) simply prohibits "the use of any portion of any residential lot or parcel of real estate outside of a building for the storage or other location of any inoperable motor vehicles or any motor vehicle parts." If yours has reached that stage, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US, on either side of the Kenton-Boone county line.

What Section 104.02 lists
The same section bans several related things:
- "Junked or wrecked automobiles, vehicles, machines, or other similar scrap or salvage materials," with inoperative farm equipment left out.
- Storing an inoperable car or parts anywhere on a residential lot outside a building.
- "The location of any inoperable motor vehicle anywhere within the right-of-way of any street in the city."
- Parking on ground not paved with concrete or blacktop, with a narrow exception for gravel areas used for parking for decades that stay properly covered.
That final point trips up owners who push a dead car from the driveway onto the lawn to clear space.
Street parking and impound
Section 72.03 bars parking "on any street or public way in the city for a continuous period in excess of 24 hours." It also bans parking facing the wrong way and parking within 20 feet of a stop sign or an intersection. Under Section 70.02, any Erlanger peace officer may have a car on a public street impounded if it breaks any law or blocks the street's lawful use. When a street is closed under Chapter 97, Section 97.053 says officers will impound cars left on it, and "the city shall have a lien" for the impound and storage costs. If yours is already at the lot, see towed or impounded.
Two counties, one set of state rules
Erlanger is in both Kenton and Boone counties. Kentucky handles titles through the county clerk, and an affidavit of incomplete transfer is filed in the seller's county of residence. Use the clerk for whichever county your address is in. The steps are the same either way:
- Get your signature on the title notarized. No white-out or scratched-out errors; a signed, notarized affidavit corrects mistakes.
- Give the buyer the assignment, the TC 96-182 form and an odometer statement.
- Keep the plate. The 2024 change put it with the seller, and $11 puts it on your next vehicle.
- Count 15 calendar days. Still nothing from the buyer by that point? File a notarized TC 96-3 and the clerk can stop the car from being registered.
Neither county has an emissions test to clear first. The Northern Kentucky program covering Boone and Kenton ended Nov. 2, 2005.
Nearby, in straight-line miles: Florence 4.1, Covington 4.3 and Independence 6.3. For statewide rules, see Kentucky.
