Selling a damaged or dead Kia Stinger

The 2020 Kia Stinger has only 16 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, yet six of the seven Stinger recall campaigns reach it. The years with the most complaints, 2018 and 2019, are a different story: wiring, the engine and fires show up there, and the recall list is shorter.

Three stretches of years

Kia built the Stinger from October 2017 to April 2023, a front-engine, rear-drive midsize car related to the Genesis G70, Wikipedia says. Wikipedia lists three engines: a 2.0-liter turbo four, a 2.5-liter turbo four and a 3.3-liter turbo V6, all with an 8-speed automatic. EPA data covers 2018 to 2023 and lists two versions, the Stinger RWD and the Stinger AWD.

2018-2019: most of the complaints

The 2018 (69) and the 2019 (44) hold most of the 169 complaints counted as of October 10, 2026. On the 2018, owners named the engine most (16), then the electrical system (9) and exterior lighting (7). Five 2018 complaints and three 2019 complaints report a fire, which accounts for all eight fire reports on the Stinger. One 2018 complaint reports a death.

Recall 18V754 is the 2018's own: a wiring harness in the engine bay and cabin can rub on a burr on the left fender panel. Dealers inspect it and add a cover or fix the damage. It covers 16,011 Stingers.

Recall 20V518 began with 2019 Stingers with the 3.3 engine in August 2020 and was widened that December to 2018-2021 Stingers. Owners are told to park outside until a dealer installs a new fuse kit in the electrical junction box. It covers 28,200 cars.

2020-2021: the recall years

Only 33 complaints across both years, and on the 2020, electrical and fuel complaints are even at 5 apiece. The recalls pile up anyway:

  • 20V422, 2020 Stingers with the 2.0 turbo: a part in the power steering assembly may have been made wrong. Dealers replace the assembly. 104 cars.
  • 20V560, 2020-2021: a plastic burr can block the fuel pump's jet nozzle. 635 cars.
  • 21V862, 2020-2021: a software error can make the fuel gauge read wrong. 53 cars.
  • 23V634, 2018-2021: a valve plunger can stick inside the high-pressure fuel pump, over-pressurizing it, and the car can lose drive power. Dealers update the engine computer and replace the pump if needed. 18,224 cars.

2022-2023: the last cars

The 2022 has 18 complaints and the 2023 has 5, with structure (3) at the top for the final year. The final cars have been out for less time, so owners have had fewer years to file. One recall reaches them: 24V169, a left turbo oil feed pipe and hose that can deteriorate on cars with the 3.3 turbo. It covers 2018-2023 Stingers, and its 36,248 vehicles also include 2019-2020 K900 sedans, so that count is not all Stingers.

Repair or sell?

If a Stinger suddenly lost power, check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup for 23V634 and 24V169 before paying for repairs, and ask a Kia dealer what they will do on a car that already failed.

If it is not covered, get the shop's number on paper, then look up listings for a running Stinger with the same engine and similar miles. Our failed turbo guide and blown engine guide cover those two jobs. Electrical faults are the most-named component overall (30 complaints); electrical problems explains why those can be hard to pin down.

Selling it whole

  1. Note the engine and drive. A 2.0, 2.5 or 3.3, rear or all-wheel drive, plus the VIN and mileage.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Explain the parking spot and if the car can roll. Low cars in steep driveways or tight garages are worth mentioning so the truck can load it.
  4. Keep it whole. Leave the wheels, turbos and converters on, and say if anything is gone.
  5. Bring the title and your ID to pickup. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.

Kia ended the Stinger over falling demand, Wikipedia says; it was the lowest-selling Kia, with 1,499 sold in South Korea.

Questions people ask

Which Stinger recalls cover the 3.3-liter V6?
Recall 24V169 covers 2018-2023 Stingers with the 3.3-liter turbo engine for a left turbo oil feed pipe and hose that can deteriorate. Recall 20V518 started with 2019 Stingers with that engine and was later widened to 2018-2021 Stingers. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls for anything still open.
How many complaints do the 2022 and 2023 Stingers have?
The 2022 has 18 and the 2023 has 5 in the October 10, 2026 file. A Stinger built late has spent fewer years with owners who could file, so these counts are not a rating of the car.
Will you buy a Stinger that lost power and won't drive?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us which engine it has, what happened and where it is parked.
