The first K4 model years
The K4 replaced the Forte. Wikipedia says it is built in Monterrey, Mexico, as a relative of the Hyundai Elantra, with a 1.6-liter four, a 1.6-liter turbo four or a 1.0-liter turbo three on its engine list, depending on market. The 2025 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick. EPA data covers 2025 through 2027 and lists both the K4 and a K4 Hatchback.
2025
The 2025 has 46 complaints. Owners named the electrical system most (8), then unknown or other (7) and air bags (7). Ten report a crash and eight an injury.
Two recalls reach it. 25V548 is about the engine. Per Kia, the connecting rod bolts may have been improperly tightened, which can cause a loss of drive power. Dealers install a new sub engine assembly. The campaign is tiny, 30 vehicles, and includes Sorentos. 26V046 is a software fix for the instrument panel display, sent wirelessly or done by a dealer. The 42,677 vehicles in it come from a long list of 2025-2026 Kias, from the Sorento and Sportage to the EV9 and Carnival, so most of that count is not K4s.
2026
Twelve complaints so far, five of them about steering. Six of the twelve report a crash. Recall 26V135 covers a rear center seat belt buckle that may not latch; dealers inspect and replace it. Its 14,870 vehicles include 2027 Tellurides. No complaints are filed on the 2027 yet.
Complaints and recalls by model year
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes / injured | Recall campaigns | Top components |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 46 | 10 / 8 | 2 | Electrical 8, unknown or other 7, air bags 7 |
| 2026 | 12 | 6 / 1 | 1 | Steering 5, unknown or other 2, speed control 1 |
Counted October 10, 2026. These are owner complaints, and a young model has had little time to collect them.
Repair, claim or sell?
Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup before anything else. A loss of drive power on a 2025 could fall under 25V548. After a crash, the insurer's estimate decides most of it; wrecked or totaled explains your choices when the car is not worth repairing. If a loan is still open, still owe on the loan shows how the payoff and title work.
Selling the whole car
- Pull together the VIN, the odometer reading and damage photos.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it is: your driveway, a body shop or a tow yard. The truck can meet it there.
- Leave it as it sits, and say what has been removed.
- Have the title, or the lender's details, ready at pickup.
Questions people ask
- How many NHTSA complaints does the K4 have?
- 58 as of October 10, 2026: 46 on the 2025 and 12 on the 2026. The K4 has only been on sale a short while, so those totals are still building.
- What is the K4 engine recall?
- Recall 25V548 covers some 2025 K4 and Sorento vehicles with connecting rod bolts that may have been improperly tightened, which can cause a loss of drive power. A dealer swaps in a new sub engine assembly at no charge. Only 30 vehicles are in that campaign.
- Can I sell a K4 I still owe money on?
- Yes, though the lender gets paid first and only then releases the title. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US; tell us about the loan when you ask for an offer.
