Selling a dead or damaged Lexus CT 200h

Brakes, not the hybrid system, lead the Lexus CT 200h's complaint file. Owners have filed 174 complaints with NHTSA on the 2011-2017 CT, and 60 of them name the service brakes. The engine comes next at 36.

Every CT sold in the US is now a 2017 or older. If yours needs brakes, engine work or a hybrid repair bigger than the car's value, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

One generation, three stretches

The CT had a single generation. Wikipedia lists a 1.8-liter 2ZR-FXE hybrid four and an eCVT, fed by a 1.3 kWh NiMH pack. Toyota Motor Kyushu built it at Miyawaka, and the article names the XW30 Prius as a related car. US sales began in March 2011. Lexus announced in May 2017 that the CT would leave the US market, and the 2017 was the last US year.

The CT numbers below are complaints owners sent NHTSA, tallied on October 10, 2026.

2011-2013: brakes and engine together

The first three years hold 126 of the 174 complaints. The 2012 has 53, with the engine named 15 times and service brakes 12. The 2013 has 46, led by service brakes at 17 and the engine at 12. Air bags show up as a top-three category on both the 2011 and 2012.

Those two years are also the only ones in a recall. Campaign 16V487000 covers 2011-2012 CT 200h models with a weld in the curtain shield air bag that could come apart; dealers installed retention brackets on the curtain shield air bags, free of charge. The campaign counted 482,002 vehicles, most of them 2010-2012 Prius and Prius Plug-in Hybrid cars, so that number is not a CT count.

2014-2015: brakes stay on top

The 2014 has 22 complaints and the 2015 has 19. Service brakes lead both, at 11 and 10. Engine complaints drop to 3 on the 2014, and the 2015's next categories are the electrical system and air bags at 3 each.

2016-2017: almost nothing on file

The last two US years have 3 and 4 complaints. No category has more than one.

Is the repair worth it?

  1. 2011 or 2012? Search the VIN on NHTSA's site and ask a Lexus dealer whether the curtain air bag brackets went on.
  2. Brake trouble? The bad brakes guide covers what to check before you decide.
  3. Hybrid system or engine warning? See hybrid battery failed and check engine light on.
  4. Compare the numbers. The youngest CT is a 2017. When a brake, engine or hybrid quote runs near what a working CT of that year fetches, letting it go unrepaired is usually the better trade.

Selling your CT whole

  1. Write down the VIN and mileage, and what the car does or doesn't do.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Let us know the parking spot, and whether the shifter will go to N for loading. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep the hybrid pack, converter and alloys on the car, and flag anything someone already took.
  5. The driver will need the title, your ID and the keys or smart fob. After you sell covers plates by state.
