Selling a dead or junk Lexus GS

No new Lexus GS has been built since August 2020, when Wikipedia says production ended, so the newest one is a 2020. Its busiest year in NHTSA's file is the 2006, which opened the third generation: 180 of the GS's 778 complaints, with exterior lighting named most often (34).

What's on file for each GS generation

GS counts are from the NHTSA owner complaint data we downloaded October 10, 2026. Owners write them and nobody has verified them. A late GS hasn't been driven nearly as long as a 2006, so its owners have filed fewer reports so far.

1993-1997: the Giugiaro GS (S140)

Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign penned the first GS, according to Wikipedia, which lists 2JZ-GE straight-six and 1UZ-FE V8 power and assembly at Tahara. Only 28 complaints are on file for 1993-1996, and none for the 1997. Two recalls replaced the front lower ball joints: 95V072 on 1993-1994 cars, where the joint surfaces were not smooth, and 99V125 on 1995-1997 cars, for poor lubrication inside the joint.

1998-2005: the second generation (S160)

These years hold 273 complaints, and 95 of them are on the 1998. Speed control complaints lead each of the 1998, 1999 and 2000, 52 in all. Suspension is second on each of those years. Recall 98V080 replaced the stability control system's yaw rate sensor on some 1998s, because electromagnetic waves could make the system act wrongly.

2006-2011: the third generation (S190)

Wikipedia lists a 3.0-liter and a 3.5-liter V6 and a 3.5-liter hybrid V6 for the GS 450h, with 6-speed, 8-speed and CVT automatics. These years hold 368 complaints. Engine complaints rank high: 22 on the 2006, 15 on the 2007 and 10 on the 2008.

The recall list is long, and much of it is shared with the IS and LS:

  • Fuel system: 07V545 (fuel pipes, 2006), 09V020 (aluminum fuel rails, 2006-2007), 11V029 (fuel pressure sensor, 2006-2007), 14V647 (sensor mounting, 2006-2011) and 18V432 (fuel delivery pipe, 2007-2011 GS 350 and GS 450h).
  • Engine: 10V309 (valve springs, 2007-2008) and 13V395 (VVT unit, 2007-2011 GS 350).
  • Pedals and brakes: on 2006-2007 GS 300 and GS 350 all-wheel-drive cars, 11V115 changed a floor carpet pad that could catch the accelerator. 10V499 swapped a brake master cylinder seal on the 2006.
  • Belts: 06V121 replaced front seat belt assemblies on the 2006.

The fuel rail campaign counted 214,570 vehicles and the brake seal campaign 728,544, but both include other Toyota and Lexus models.

2012-2020: the fourth generation (L10)

Built at Tahara and at Toyota's Motomachi plant, with engines from a 2.0-liter turbo four to the GS F's V8, per Wikipedia. These years hold 109 complaints. The 2013 has 48, led by service brakes (7), and recall 14V270 replaced the brake pedal load sensing switch on 10,462 2013 GS 350s. Steering is the top component on the 2014 and 2015.

Fuel pumps are the late-model theme. 18V107 replaced high-pressure fuel pumps on 2016-2018 GS F models. 26V222 covers the low-pressure pump inside the tank on 2016-2020 GS models, along with some RC and IS cars; interim letters went out June 5, 2026. Fuel pump recalls 20V012 and 20V682 also reach GS years.

Fix it or let it go?

  1. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2016-2020, the 26V222 fuel pump recall may still be open.
  2. Front suspension noise on a 1993-1997? Find out from a Lexus dealer if 95V072 or 99V125 was completed, then read broken suspension.
  3. Engine trouble on a 2007-2011 GS 350? Ask a Lexus dealer about the VVT recall (13V395) before paying for a repair.
  4. Finally, line the estimate up against listings for running GS sedans of your year. With the model out of production, age weighs on that number; the old or high-mileage guide covers the choice.

GS complaints and recalls, year by year

Sparse years share rows. A recall covering several GS years is counted once under each.

Selling your GS whole

  1. Write down the VIN, mileage, version (GS 300, 350, 400, 430, 450h, 200t or GS F) and the problem.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Explain where the GS is parked and whether a rear-drive car with a dead engine can still be pushed. Free pickup anywhere in the US applies.
  4. Don't take parts off first. If something is already gone, say so.
  5. Sign the GS's title over to the driver at the curb. After you sell covers plates by state.

Questions people ask

Which Lexus GS years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2006 tops the October 10, 2026 file with 180. The 2007 (106), 1998 (95) and 1999 (59) come after it. Counts for the fourth-generation GS stay low, partly since it is the newest GS and owners have had it for fewer years.
Is there a fuel pump recall on late GS models?
Yes, several. Recall 26V222 covers the low-pressure fuel pump on some 2016-2020 GS models; interim letters went out June 5, 2026. 18V107 replaced high-pressure fuel pumps on 2016-2018 GS F models, and 20V012 and 20V682 also reach some GS years. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you buy a GS that is too old to be worth fixing?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits; describe the problem and the parking spot when you ask.
