Selling a Lincoln Blackwood that's done

Wikipedia calls the Blackwood a major commercial failure: Lincoln pulled it from the market within a year, and selling off the leftover trucks took two more. Reviewers faulted its lack of utility and off-road ability. Production ran from September 2000 to August 2002, and the only 2003 models were a short run built for Mexico.

What it is

The Blackwood came from Kansas City Assembly in Claycomo, Missouri, on the Ford P platform shared with the tenth-generation F-Series. It used a 5.4 L InTech DOHC V8 and a 4-speed automatic, and EPA lists it only as a 2WD. To build its cargo bed at a realistic cost, 20 square feet of expensive wood was swapped for laminate composite panels, with the inlaid aluminum strakes kept. The Mark LT replaced it.

Recalls and complaints

NHTSA has three recall campaigns:

  • 05V388 (2002): the speed control deactivation switch may overheat, smoke or burn. The 4,500,000 vehicles counted span many Ford pickups and SUVs, not just Blackwoods.
  • 07V078 (2003): the same switch may overheat. Dealers install a fused wiring harness. 155,584 vehicles, again across several Ford trucks.
  • 11V385 (2002-2003): dealers replace the fuel tank straps. That campaign counts 1,100,000 vehicles and is mostly 1997-2004 F-150s and F-250s.

Owners have filed 8 complaints with NHTSA, all for the 2002, as of October 10, 2026. The components named include power train, exterior lighting, speed control, air bags, engine and engine cooling, and the electrical system. One reports a crash and one an injury. The 2003 has no complaints on file.

The speed control switch recalls and the fuel tank strap recall are each counted on both years where they apply.

Fix or sell

Run the VIN at NHTSA first. On a truck this age, an unfinished speed control switch recall is worth knowing about whatever you decide. If the engine or transmission is gone, get a quote and weigh it against the truck's value running. For a Blackwood that has been stored rather than driven, see sitting for years.

Selling it whole

Gather the VIN, mileage and the title, then get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008. Describe where the Blackwood sits and if it rolls, and keep it in one piece. More on big vehicles: junk truck or SUV. See also the Mark LT or every Lincoln.

Questions people ask

Does the speed control switch recall cover my Blackwood?
Recall 05V388 covers 2002 Blackwoods and 07V078 covers 2003 trucks. Both deal with a speed control deactivation switch that can overheat. Enter the Blackwood's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether a dealer ever made that fix.
Why are there so few complaints?
Few were sold. Wikipedia calls the Blackwood a major commercial failure, pulled from the market within a year. Eight complaints is a small sample, not proof the truck had no problems.
Will you buy a Blackwood that hasn't run in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars and trucks, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
