Selling a worn-out or non-running Lincoln MKT

The MKT steered with electricity, and most owner complaints point there. Steering is named in 90 of the 295 complaints filed with NHTSA on this crossover, and it tops the list on every model year from 2010 through 2013. Whether yours carried a family, a casket or airport fares, if it's done you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

By model year: three looks, one chassis

Ford built the MKT at Oakville Assembly in Ontario from July 2009 to October 2019, on the D4 platform, with a 6-speed automatic, per Wikipedia. EPA lists hearse, limo and livery versions alongside the regular SUV. Lincoln restyled the front twice, which makes a handy way to group the years.

2010-2012: the original grille

These years hold 111 complaints, and steering leads all three: 24 of 65 on the 2010, 10 of 19 on the 2011, 17 of 27 on the 2012. Wikipedia notes the MKT used electric power steering instead of hydraulic, paired with sensors for Active Park Assist. Recall 15V340 covers that electric power assist on 2011-2013 cars; dealers check the steering module for trouble codes. The engine has 9 complaints on the 2010.

2013-2016: the first restyle

For 2013 Lincoln redesigned the front fascia with a more tightly spaced grille. These four years hold 157 complaints. The 2013 has the most of any MKT year, 70, with steering at 29, and it lists 8 recall campaigns. Several are fuel-related and shared with Ford's other D3/D4 models: fuel delivery modules (13V227, 15V812) and the 3.5L EcoBoost fuel pump module (16V621, 2013-2015). A halfshaft check (14V393) covers the 2013-2014.

On the 2014, structure leads with 13 of 54. Recall 20V072 covers rear suspension toe links that may fracture on certain 2013-2018 MKT, Flex and Taurus vehicles. Turbocharger oil supply tubes are checked on 2016-2017 3.5L cars (16V925).

The hearse and livery builds have their own campaigns: 12V243 (brake rotors, 128 vehicles), 15V172 (vacuum pump relay, 1,549) and 15V476 (missing second-row seats on some 2015 livery cars, 265).

2017-2019: the horizontal grille

The 2017 update brought a horizontal grille shared with the MKC and the 2016-2018 MKX. These last three years hold only 27 complaints. Back over prevention, NHTSA's category for rearview cameras, has 11 of the 2019's 17. Two camera campaigns apply: 24V951 (2019) and 25V695 (2015-2019, 1,448,655 vehicles across many Ford models). B-pillar door trim that may come loose is covered on 2016-2019 MKTs by 25V827, which names only the MKT (11,852 vehicles).

The MKT's NHTSA record, year by year

Our tally of NHTSA's owner records on October 10, 2026. The late-run MKTs have spent fewer years in owners' hands than the launch cars, so they have had less chance to draw reports. A recall campaign shows up on every year it lists.

Fix it, or pass it on?

See how the shop's quote compares with the price of a working MKT that matches your year and mileage. A big gap in the wrong direction is your answer.

  1. Steering trouble on a 2011-2013? Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall page for 15V340.
  2. Clunk or wander from the rear? Check 20V072, then see broken suspension.
  3. Ex-livery or funeral car with huge miles? Old or high mileage covers what changes, and titled to a business covers the paperwork.
  4. Quote over the car's value? See repairs cost more than it's worth.

Selling the MKT whole

  1. Note the VIN, the miles and the version: SUV, hearse, limo or livery.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where the MKT is parked and if it will roll. If it's a stretched limo, mention the length.
  4. Leave it whole. Wheels, converters and any coachwork stay on.
  5. At pickup, have the title and ID of whoever owns it, person or company. After you sell covers plates and insurance.

Questions people ask

Why do MKT complaints mention steering so often?
Of the 295 MKT reports NHTSA held on October 10, 2026, 90 point to the steering. It is the top issue in each year from 2010 to 2013. The MKT uses electric power steering, not hydraulic. On 2011-2013 MKTs, recall 15V340 deals with the electric power assist system. The Fusion, Taurus, Flex and MKS are also among its 393,623 vehicles.
Our MKT was a hearse or a livery car. Does that change anything?
Check three campaigns written for those versions: 12V243 (brake rotors on 2013 Town Car package cars sent to coach builders), 15V172 (the vacuum pump relay on 2013-2015 limo and hearse packages) and 15V476 (missing second-row seats on some 2015 livery cars). If the car is titled to a company, see our guide to selling a car titled to a business.
What is the MKT rear toe link recall?
Recall 20V072 covers certain 2013-2018 MKT, Flex and Taurus vehicles; the notice mentions the Police Interceptor and SHO Performance Pack. The rear suspension toe links may fracture, and dealers replace them. The campaign counted 211,207 vehicles.
Will you buy a high-mile MKT that doesn't run?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us which version it is so the right truck comes.
