Selling a junk car in Auburn, Maine
From November 15 to April 15, a car left overnight in an Auburn city lot is breaking the rules. Section 52-181 says "no person shall park a vehicle in any city-owned lot between the hours of 12:01 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. from November 15 to April 15, except in spaces designated as winter relief parking areas." So a dead car stashed in a municipal lot for the winter has no safe spot. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so you can sell the whole car as it sits instead, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Auburn's lot and street rules
- Permit areas. The rule reads: "No car shall be parked in an area restricted to permit parking between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m." If a car sits in a permit section with no valid permit on display, that is "prima facie evidence" of illegal parking.
- Towing. A car in violation "may be towed pursuant to section 52-204," with enforcement under section 52-203.
- Who answers for it. "The person in whose name the car is registered shall be responsible." A car still registered to you is still your ticket.
- Big vehicles at home. Section 52-182 says no commercial vehicle over 9,200 pounds GVW, or longer than 22 feet, "shall be parked overnight on any residential street, or for longer than two hours during the daylight hours," unless it is working at the site. A dead box truck in front of an Auburn house fits that rule. See junk truck or SUV, or towed or impounded if it is already gone.
What "automobile graveyard" means in Auburn's code
In Auburn, Section 14-2 points the term at body shops. It covers storage "for three or more unserviceable, unregistered or uninspected, discarded, worn out or junked motor vehicles" by a business "engaged primarily in doing auto body repair work." Maine law applies the phrase more broadly. Any yard, field or outdoor area that keeps 3 or more unregistered or uninspected vehicles or parts qualifies, and the state calls these places a nuisance. Auburn's code also defines a "junk collector" as anyone "dealing or trading in junk."
Titles and plates from Auburn
The BMV branch we checked for Androscoggin County is at 36 Mollison Way, Suite 1, in Lewiston (207-753-7750). Measured straight from the center of Auburn, it sits roughly 4 miles to the northeast.
In Maine, only cars from the last 25 model years carry titles. From January 1, 2026 that is 2001 and later, so an older Auburn car leaves without one. If your Auburn car is recent enough to have a title, sign it to the buyer at handoff and fill in the miles shown. Lost it? You can get a duplicate for $33 online or with form MVT-8.
Your registration ends when the title passes. The plates belong to the state, but you hold on to them. Moving the number to another car in the same registration year costs $8. If they will sit unused for 6 months, send them and the registration to the Secretary of State, and cancel them on form MVR-60. After delivery and a completed transfer, Maine says you are no longer liable as owner for the car's later use.
