Selling a junk car in Brunswick
In Brunswick, $75 in unpaid parking tickets is enough to lose a car to the tow truck. Section 15-85 lets the police "remove by use of a wrecker, and impound any vehicle found on any public or private way or public property, which has outstanding parking tickets with accumulated fines totalling seventy-five dollars ($75.00) or more." A dead car that keeps drawing tickets on the street can reach that line. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so you can sell the whole car as it sits before it gets there, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

After a Brunswick tow
- The officer who orders the tow tells the dispatcher where the car is stored.
- The chief of police, or a representative, notifies the owner or operator "by certified mail, return receipt requested," within "five (5) business days," with the storage location and what release requires.
- If the wrecker has the car secured before you arrive, you pay the wrecker "all the towing charges" and pay the chief "all fines or waiver charges" for an on-the-scene release.
- If it was hauled away for impoundment, you pay the wrecker "all towing and storage charges" plus the fines and waiver charges.
Towed or impounded explains selling a car that is already in a lot, and tickets or registration hold covers the fines.
The two-hour clock downtown
Section 15-76 limits curb parking to "two (2) consecutive hours" from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except Sundays and holidays, on Belmont Street, Station Avenue and Town Hall Place. On the east side of Maine Street, the two southernmost spaces on each block from School Street to Mason Street allow three hours, until 9:00 p.m. on Fridays. Section 15-77 also puts a two-hour cap on town-owned lots, but some spaces allow all-day parking: 42 in the Cumberland Street lot, 37 on the easterly side of the Bank Street lot, and the long-term lot on Union Street across from town hall. If a car won't start, you can't shift it every two hours.
Junk cars on private land
The Brunswick sections we found deal with parking and towing. We did not find a town rule on junk cars kept at home, so state law applies there, and Brunswick may have rules we did not see. 3 is the number under Maine law. A Brunswick lot with that many unregistered or uninspected vehicles, or their parts, kept outside is an automobile graveyard.
Title, plates and inspection
Brunswick is in Cumberland County, so local cars need an emissions test as well as Maine's yearly safety inspection. Brunswick's county BMV branch, per our check, is in Portland at 125 Presumpscot St. (207-822-6400). That is about 20 miles southwest of the middle of Brunswick, as the crow flies.
As of January 1, 2026, a car from model year 2001 or later needs a Maine title. When the Brunswick car changes hands, sign the title to the buyer and fill in the miles. After the transfer is finished, you stop being responsible as owner. Keep your plates, which belong to the state: move them to another car this registration year for $8, or send them back with the registration if they will not be used within 6 months.

- Section 15-85 lets the police tow and impound a vehicle on a public or private way or public property once its unpaid parking tickets reach $75 or more in fines.
- My car got towed in Brunswick. How do I get it back?
- The police must notify the owner or operator by certified mail within five business days, with the storage location. To get the car released you pay the wrecker its towing and storage charges and pay the chief of police the fines and waiver charges.
