Sanford's title paperwork leaves town. The York County BMV office we found for Sanford is at 63 Portland Road in Kennebunk (207-985-4890). On a map it lies about 12 miles east of central Sanford. Sanford's code

We did not find Sanford's ordinances online, so we quote none. Sanford follows Maine statutes, and it could also set local limits on junk or unregistered vehicles. A notice from the city will name the rule it relies on.

Safety inspection only, in York County

Maine requires a safety inspection on every car each year. The extra emissions test applies to cars registered in Cumberland County, and Sanford is in York County. So a Sanford car that lost its sticker failed the safety check itself. Failed inspection or rust and rotted frame cover what that usually means for an older car.

Recyclers in Maine law

Maine's title law defines a recycler as someone who buys or acquires vehicles to resell as salvage or scrap, to sell parts, or to work as a scrap processor. Selling a wrecked Sanford car to a licensed recycler skips a step: the owner does not need a certificate of salvage first. Junkyard or scrap yard sorts out the two kinds of yards.

Title and plates for a York County car

Only the newest 25 model years get a Maine title. Starting January 1, 2026, a Sanford car from 2001 on needs one and anything before that does not. For a titled car, the assignment and warranty go to the buyer at delivery, with the odometer reading. There is no separate seller notice to mail in later. Once the car is delivered and the title transfer complete, you are not liable as owner for its later use.

The registration expires when the title passes. The plates are state property and you take them with you. In Sanford, an $8 fee puts the plate number on a new car in that registration year. Won't renew or move it inside 6 months? In Sanford, mail the two plates, the registration and form MVR-60 to the Secretary of State.
