Selling an old or dead car in Scarborough

If the dead car in your Scarborough garage is a 2000 model or older, Maine does not require a title to sell it. In Scarborough, as across Maine, only the latest 25 model years carry a title. From January 1, 2026, that covers 2001 and up, and cars past 25 years old skip it. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, old ones included. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The title cutoff, car by car

  • A 1998 pickup that has sat behind the barn for years: no title needed under Maine's age rule. See old project car.
  • A 2005 sedan with a lost title: get a duplicate for $33. Use the online Duplicate Title service or mail in form MVT-8. Printed on the duplicate is a legend saying a person holding rights under the original certificate may still have a claim.
  • A 2012 car still titled to a parent: see car not in your name.

For a car that does need a title, you assign and warrant it to the buyer, with the odometer information, when you hand the car over. Selling with no title covers the harder cases.

Scarborough's own rules

We did not find Scarborough's code online, so nothing here quotes it. Maine law applies in town, but Scarborough is free to set its own rules on junk or unregistered cars parked on private property.

Inspection in Cumberland County

Because Scarborough falls in Cumberland County, cars registered in town get an emissions test on top of Maine's yearly safety inspection. An old car that cannot pass either one can still be sold whole.

Where to handle the title

For Scarborough, the nearest BMV branch we found is 125 Presumpscot St. in Portland (207-822-6400). It is about 9 miles northeast of the middle of Scarborough, as the crow flies.

Plates after the sale

When title passes, the registration expires. The plates belong to the state and you keep them. Paying $8 moves them onto another car for the rest of that registration year. Not using a Scarborough plate for 6 months? Remove it and send it, plus the registration, to the Secretary of State. Form MVR-60 cancels them. On a titled car, delivery plus a completed transfer ends your liability as owner.

Questions people ask

Can I sell an old car from Scarborough with no title?
Yes, once it is over 25 model years old. As of January 1, 2026, Maine wants a title just for 2001 or newer models. Older ones are exempt.
Where is the BMV branch for Scarborough?
The Cumberland County branch we looked at is 125 Presumpscot St., Portland, phone 207-822-6400. On a map that is about 9 miles northeast of central Scarborough.
After a Scarborough sale, are the plates still mine?
Yes. In Maine the seller keeps the plates, which are state property. The registration stops when the Scarborough car changes hands. For $8, the number can go on another car that same registration year.
