Getting rid of a dead car in Westbrook
A dead car parked on a Westbrook street has one day. Section 310-88 says a vehicle "shall be deemed abandoned after it has been parked on any street or municipal parking lot in Westbrook for a period of over 24 hours." A car that won't start after a cold night can cross that line before you have found a mechanic. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The city's clocks
Westbrook's rule is short, and it covers city property only:
- Streets and city lots: 24 hours. After that the car is abandoned in the code's eyes.
- City parking garages: three days. A car there is abandoned if "left in the garage for more than three consecutive days without permission" from the Constable or another city official.
- No dumping. "No person shall abandon any vehicle of any kind on any street, municipal parking lot, or municipal parking garage of the City."
Once a car counts as abandoned, the police chief, or someone the chief picks, is authorized to "remove at the owner's expense any such abandoned vehicle" and store it, again at the owner's expense. If that has already happened, see towed or impounded.
A car in your own driveway
The section we found says nothing about private land, so state law is the guide. A Westbrook spot counts as an automobile graveyard under Maine law if three or more vehicles, or their parts, are stored outside without registration or inspection. Separately, the state's abandoned-vehicle subchapter covers any vehicle that stays on a residential lot past 6 months. Westbrook may have its own rules beyond these, so check with the city if you get a letter.
Cumberland County's extra test
Westbrook sits in Cumberland County, and that matters for an old car. Every vehicle in Maine needs a safety inspection each year. Cars on Cumberland County registrations take an emissions test on top of that. A failing sensor or a rusted exhaust can be the repair that tips the math. Our guides on failed emissions and failed inspection cover that choice.
Plates come off first
Pull your plates before the Westbrook car is handed over. In Maine the registration ends the moment title passes, and the plates are state property that stay with you. An $8 transfer fee moves that number onto a replacement vehicle registered within the same year. Not renewing or transferring the Westbrook plates within 6 months? In Westbrook, put those and the registration in the mail to Maine's Secretary of State.
The title
Maine requires titles only for the last 25 model years, meaning model year 2001 or later, counted from January 1, 2026. A car older than that is exempt. On a newer car, you sign the assignment over to the buyer at delivery and write in the odometer reading. Delivering the car and finishing the title transfer ends your liability as owner under section 662. If the title is lost, a duplicate is $33, online or on form MVT-8.

Getting an offer
Call (877) 421-6008 or begin online. Let us know the car, the rough odometer number, if it can still drive itself, and which papers you have. If the car is on the street with the 24-hour clock running, say so. The truck can meet it at the curb, in a lot or in your driveway.
Questions people ask
- Can a car that broke down sit on a Westbrook street, and what's the limit?
- Yes, one day. Past that point Section 310-88 says the vehicle "shall be deemed abandoned," and police can tow and store it at your cost.
- Does a junk car in my Westbrook driveway break a city rule?
- The section we found covers streets, city lots and city garages, not private land. Under state law, three or more unregistered or uninspected vehicles stored outdoors make an automobile graveyard, and anything left on a residential lot beyond 6 months is covered by Maine's abandoned-vehicle rules. Westbrook could add local rules on top.
- Do I have to pass emissions before selling a dead car?
- No rule we found ties a sale to a passing test. The yearly safety inspection, plus an emissions test in Cumberland County, applies to registered vehicles. A dead car sold as it sits can go without either.
