Selling a junk or totaled car in Acton
An Acton car totaled after its tenth birthday stays out of the Massachusetts salvage system. The state exempts passenger vehicles that had reached 10 years of age when the loss happened, so an older car the insurer writes off is spared a branded title. Younger wrecks get a brand that lasts for good. Either way, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits.

When a car counts as salvage
Massachusetts sets no percentage. Chapter 90D, section 1, names two cases. One is a stolen car never found. The other is a car hurt so badly, by a crash, fire, water or anything else, that the owner or insurer decides repair makes no economic sense, so it is left unrepaired. That call belongs to people, not a formula.
Once a car fits, a 10-day clock starts on the salvage-title application. The owner or insurer files it, counting from the settlement, or from the event itself when no insurer was involved.
What the brand on the title means
Every salvage title gets one of two primary brands:
- REPR, repairable. No registration until the car passes the RMV salvage inspection.
- PART, parts only. Chosen by the insurer that totals the car. A PART car is off Massachusetts roads permanently.
Seven secondary brands explain why the car was lost: Theft, Fire, Collision, Vandalism, Flood, Flood/Salt and Other. Nothing erases them. A Massachusetts salvage title is permanent, and no salvage car is ever issued a clear one again. Our salvage title guide covers selling one.
Acton's own rules
Searching online, we found no Acton bylaw on junk cars. For a wreck parked at an Acton home, then, this page has only Massachusetts law to offer, and Acton may well keep local rules; ask the town before a car sits for a season. The state rule reaches cars left away from home. After 72 hours on a way, or on land whose owner never agreed, a car that seems abandoned and is worth less than the cost to haul it can be taken by a street officer and scrapped as refuse.
Selling it once the insurer is done
Keep the car after the claim, and the title you hold, branded or clean, is what gets signed over. At delivery the statute wants an assignment carrying the odometer's true reading plus a warranty that the title is good. In practice: write down the miles, then the two of you sign, print and date. A title without room for the price sends the price to a bill of sale. The RMV's list has no notary step for Acton sellers.
Next, cancel the registration online and file the receipt away. Your insurer wants a photocopy. The plates stay yours: recycle them, cut them, or bolt them on your next car if it arrives within 7 calendar days.

Questions people ask
- My car was 12 when it was totaled. Does it get a salvage title?
- No salvage process applies. Massachusetts exempts passenger vehicles that had reached 10 years of age when the loss happened.
- Will a PART-branded car ever be registered again?
- Never in Massachusetts. The insurer that totals the car sets the parts-only brand, and it closes off registration for good.
- Who files for the salvage title?
- Either the owner or the insurer. You get 10 days. For an insured car the count starts at settlement, and for an uninsured car it starts at the event.
- Is there an Acton bylaw on junk cars?
- We found none online for Acton, so the page uses Massachusetts law. Acton might have rules of its own; the town can confirm.
