Selling a dead or junk car in Norwood

When police have a Norwood car towed, the storage meter starts. Massachusetts caps it on police-ordered tows of passenger cars at $35 per 24 hours in a lot that is secure, fenced and lit, and half that anywhere else. The storage company also holds a lien. With an older car, a few weeks in that lot can add up past its value. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

After a tow in Norwood

That cap is in M.G.L. c. 159B s. 6B and covers involuntary tows ordered by police. With a lien in place, the lot generally wants its charges settled before the car leaves. Find out the balance, then choose between paying to keep it and selling it. Towed or impounded covers both routes.

Norwood's bylaws weren't online where we searched, so this page relies on Massachusetts law. Norwood could have local rules on parking, towing and junk cars. For tows from private property, the RMV points owners to local police guides. Separately, c. 90 s. 22C, a Norwood car that seems left behind, stayed on land over 72 hours uninvited, and is worth under its removal bill can be scrapped as refuse by an officer.

No title in the glovebox?

A lost title can be replaced for $25. Norwood owners may file online, or post the form to MassDOT's Title Division in Boston and pay by check or money order. Arrival can take 10 business days, so request it before planning the sale. If an old loan still shows, include the lender's signed letter on letterhead, since the RMV rejects faxes and copies. See junk car with no title.

Signing it over

When selling the Norwood car, the owner signs the title over, writing the true odometer reading and giving a warranty of title. The RMV also has both people print names and date that block. A notary isn't one of its seller steps. The price goes on the title when there's space, and on a bill of sale when there isn't.

Cancel, then deal with the plates

No release-of-liability form exists in Massachusetts. Your protection is c. 90D s. 15: once you've signed the assignment and delivered the car, later operation and violations aren't your liability. Even so, cancel the registration on MyMassGov, keep the confirmation, and give your insurer a copy, which also ends Norwood's excise bills. The plates are yours. In Norwood, cut or recycle the plates, or transfer them within 7 calendar days to a replacement vehicle.
