Selling a dead car in West Springfield
In West Springfield, as in every Massachusetts town, a street officer may treat an abandoned car as trash. State law permits it in West Springfield for a car that looks abandoned, has been parked past 72 hours, and is worth less than the tow. Selling first is the better ending. We buy whole non-running and junk cars: sell the whole car as it sits, and free pickup anywhere in the US includes West Springfield.

What we know about town rules
We found no West Springfield code online, so this page keeps to state law. The town may still have bylaws on junk cars. On private-property removals, the RMV's page about automobile law tells residents to look to local police guides, since bylaws and enforcement are local.
Chapter 90, section 22C
The statute speaks of a vehicle that "a city or town street officer" deems apparently abandoned and standing over 72 hours. It reaches public and private ways, and any property where the owner has not given permission. When the car's value falls short of removal and disposal costs, the officer may take it and get rid of it as refuse.
A car that isn't yours
Plenty of dead cars in town lots belong to someone else. For a West Springfield tow off private land, Chapter 266, section 120D sets two conditions. Police get told first. The driver got a warning in person or from a posted sign. West Springfield landowners who don't alert police, or who tow without the car owner agreeing, can be fined up to $100. See abandoned car on your property.
No release form, by design
Massachusetts has no release-of-liability form. Section 15(e) of chapter 90D covers you instead. After a West Springfield seller signs the assignment and lets the car go, whatever driving and tickets follow aren't on them, even before the buyer's title comes. The statute also makes the odometer reading and a title warranty part of that assignment.
The registration is the piece you must end yourself. West Springfield mails the excise bill, not the Registry of Motor Vehicles. West Springfield bills $25 for each $1,000 of value, again every year the car remains registered. Cancel through MyMassGov, file the receipt, and send a copy to the insurance company. Then the plates get destroyed or recycled.
For the title itself: mileage, then signatures, printed names and the date from both sides. Price on the title when there is a line; otherwise on a bill of sale. No notary is listed among the RMV's seller steps.

Questions people ask
- Someone left a dead car in my West Springfield lot. Can I just have it towed?
- Only under the conditions in M.G.L. c. 266 s. 120D. The driver must have been barred from parking there, either told directly or by a posted sign from whoever controls the property, and police must be notified. If a West Springfield tow skips telling police and lacks the owner's consent, the fine can reach $100.
- After I sell, could I get a ticket for something the buyer does?
- No. Under chapter 90D, section 15(e), a West Springfield owner who signs the title assignment and passes the car on is no longer responsible for its later use or violations, even if the buyer's title is still pending. Massachusetts uses no separate release form.
- Does West Springfield have its own junk car bylaw?
- When we checked, the town's code was not online, which is why this page follows state law. Ask the police department or town offices whether a local bylaw applies.
