Selling an old or junk Mazda 929
Every structure complaint NHTSA holds on the Mazda 929, 26 in all, is on a 1988 or 1989 car. Structure makes up 19 of the 1989's 36 complaints as of October 10, 2026. Both years are also under one recall for front door handles that can come loose.

Which 929 is in the US data
Wikipedia says Mazda built the 929 in Japan from 1973 to 1997, and lists its versions from the LA2 to the HE. The EPA data covers model years 1988 to 1995, a midsize car. That span falls in two of those versions: the HC (1986-1991) and the HD (1991-1995). The sections below group 1988-1991 and 1992-1995 to match, though the year a market switched may differ. The car in the photo is a 1970s 929 coupe, older than anything in this data.
1988-1991: doors and seat belts
These four years hold 100 complaints.
Doors. The 1988 has 7 structure complaints and the 1989 has 19, more than half of that year's total. Recall 93V174 covers both years. Molded resin front door handles can break where the latch rod attaches, and the rod drops inside the door. Lowering the window can then push the rod down and release the door. Dealers replace the handle and latch assembly. The 929 shares that recall's 244,000 vehicles with other models, so not all of them are 929s.
Seat belts. Seat belts lead the 1988 (10 complaints) and the 1990 (6). Recall 95V103 covers 1988-1991 cars. On the front belt buckles, the red plastic "PRESS" release buttons can crack, and the broken bits can lock up the buckle. NHTSA asks 929 owners to inspect both front buckles and the red buttons on them. The 360,433 total covers the full recall and may include other models.
The 1991 is different: hydraulic brakes lead, with 9 of its 18 complaints.
1992-1995: brakes and an ignition switch
These years hold 69 complaints. The 1992 has 35, spread across seats (6), hydraulic brakes (5) and the engine and cooling system (5). It is the one 929 year with no recall.
The 1993, 1994 and 1995 share recall 15V674, filed in 2015. It lists 1993-1995 929s alongside the MPV, 323, Protege, MX-3, MX-6 and 626, and dealers replace the ignition switch free. The recall began December 17, 2015. Its 1,368,500 count is for the whole campaign across all those models, not the 929 alone.
Visibility leads the 1993 (4 complaints), brakes and visibility tie on the 1994 (3 each), and the 1995 has just 3 complaints.

Keep it or sell it?
Put the VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup first. On a 1993-1995, an open ignition switch recall is a free dealer fix. On a 1988-1989, the door handle recall covers front handles that can break where they hold the latch rod.
Beyond recalls, the youngest 929 is a 1995. After years parked, a car tends to need tires, fluids and brake work before it can go anywhere. Sitting for years walks through that, and old project car helps if you'd planned to restore it.
Selling a 929 whole
- Find the 929's VIN on the dashboard or door jamb, and note the odometer reading.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Give us the location and say if the tires stay up. A car stuck in a garage or a backyard just needs a clear path for the truck.
- Leave it all on the car. Tell us if anything was taken off.
- On pickup day, have the 929's title and your photo ID ready. After you sell covers plates by state.
