Selling a dead or junk Mazda 626
Almost six in ten owner complaints about the Mazda 626 point at one system. Of the 3,209 complaints owners filed with NHTSA, 1,903 name the power train, and 1,866 of those are on 1993-2002 cars. If your 626 has stopped shifting or won't move, it fits the most common story in the file.

What owners reported, era by era
The numbers are owner complaints sent to NHTSA, as of our October 10, 2026 check. They are reports, not a reliability rating. We have no generation history for the 626 in our data, so the eras below follow the EPA model years and the way NHTSA's numbers shift. In North America the 626 sedan was built at Mazda's plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, alongside the Probe and the MX-6, Wikipedia notes.
1984-1987: quiet years, two recalls
Only 57 complaints cover these four years. Recall 86V042000 covers the 1986: the throttle angle sensor on the carburetor could have a nylon rotor that shrinks in heat and makes the throttle stick. Recall 90V118000 replaced ignition switches on 1986-1987 cars. That campaign counted 102,548 vehicles and may include other models.
1988-1992: seat belts lead
For each year from 1988 to 1992, owners pointed to seat belts more than any other part. The 1988 also has 7 recall campaigns, the most of any 626 year. One of them, 88V063000, replaced automatic shoulder belts whose drive spring could break. Another, 87V186000, added a rubber sheet where the fuel tank band could rub the tank.
On 1988-1989 cars, recall 95V103005 deals with the red PRESS buttons on the front buckles, which could crack and jam the buckle. The campaign took in 360,433 vehicles and may include other models. Recall 93V174000 replaced front door handle and latch assemblies on 1988-1991 cars.
1993-2002: the power train years
The complaint count jumps here: 122 on the 1993, 282 on the 1994 and 488 on the 1995. Power train leads every year in this run. On the 1995 it is 327 of 488 complaints. On the 1998 it is 307 of 434.
Air bags rank second on the 1995, 1996 and 1997. Recall 98V249000 reprogrammed the air bag sensor on 1995-1997 cars because the bags could go off in minor undercarriage impacts.
Two recalls deal with the timing belt tensioner. On the 1997 (98V206001), an external spring in the tensioner could break and get caught in the belt. On the 1998-1999 (00V134000), the same kind of spring could break. Engine and engine cooling complaints peak on the 1998, at 67.
Recall 15V674000, filed in 2015, replaces the ignition switch on 1993-1998 626s. Its 1,368,500 vehicles span seven Mazda models, from the MPV to the 929, so that number is not a 626 count.
Complaints and recall campaigns by model year
Our Mazda 626 tallies were taken off NHTSA's site on October 10, 2026. When one recall spans several 626 years, it appears in each year's row but just once in the grouped total.

Repair the 626, or sell it as is?
With a car this age, the cost of the fix is usually what settles it. Compare that quote with what the 626 would sell for running. If fixing the 626 costs close to that amount or more, it's simpler to sell it whole.
- Check the VIN first. Run it at NHTSA's recall lookup. A 1993-1998 may show the ignition switch campaign; ask a Mazda dealer whether it still applies.
- Won't shift or won't move? That matches the power train pattern on 1993-2002 cars. Our bad transmission guide walks through the warning signs and how to think about fixing it.
- Engine quit suddenly on a 1997-1999? Ask whether the tensioner recall was done. Our broken timing belt guide explains what a snapped belt can mean.
- Just worn out? See repairs that cost more than it's worth and selling an old or high-mileage car.
Selling the 626 whole
- Start with the basics: the VIN, the miles, the problem, and if it can roll or steer.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it's parked. Our truck can take a 626 from a driveway, a backyard, a garage or a shop lot. If the tires are flat or the wheel is locked, say so, and the driver will bring what it takes to load it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it complete. The engine, converter and wheels should stay on, and let us know what's been taken off already.
- When the driver comes, keep the title and your photo ID close by. Lost the title? Start with selling with no title. The after you sell page covers plates and insurance by state.

Questions people ask
- Which Mazda 626 model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- As of October 10, 2026, the 1995 626 leads with 488 complaints, then the 1998 (434), the 1996 (359) and the 1997 (358). In each of those 626 years, the power train drew the most owner reports.
- Is my 626 part of the ignition switch recall?
- It may be if it is a 1993-1998. Recall 15V674000 replaces the ignition switch on those 626s and on several other Mazda models. Put your VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls, then ask a Mazda dealer whether the recall still applies to your car.
- Will you take a 626 that won't shift or won't move?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us where your 626 is parked and if it rolls, and we will match the truck to it.
- Is it worth taking parts off before selling?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. Missing parts on a 626 affect the offer, so mention them early.
