Selling a junk or non-running Mazda CX-7
Almost half of all CX-7 complaints at NHTSA sit on one model year. Owners have filed 1,132 complaints across the 2007-2012 CX-7, counted October 10, 2026, and 528 of them are about the 2007. On that year, 185 complaints name the engine and engine cooling, and 30 report a fire.

The second thing to know is the recall list. The CX-7 has six recall campaigns, and five swap the front passenger air bag inflator. All five say to park the SUV until it is repaired.
If your CX-7 has a dead engine or more trouble than it's worth, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
One generation, two different complaint files
The CX-7 had a single generation. Wikipedia says Mazda built it at its Hiroshima plant from February 2006 to August 2012, on the Ford C1 platform that also sat under the Ford Focus and Mazda3. The first engine was a 2.3-liter MZR DISI turbo four with a six-speed automatic. Later CX-7s also offered a 2.5-liter MZR four, rated at 161 hp, with a five-speed automatic. Mazda dropped the CX-7 in August 2012 in favor of the CX-5.
The complaint data splits the run in two.
2007-2008: the engine years
The 2007 and 2008 together hold 719 complaints. On the 2007, engine and engine cooling (185) leads, ahead of air bags (99) and engine (95). On the 2008, air bags (50) edge out engine (38) and engine and engine cooling (36). These two years also account for 39 of the 42 complaints that report a fire.
If your early CX-7 is the turbo and it has stopped running, our guides on a failed turbo and a blown engine lay out how to weigh a repair.
2009-2012: suspension and lights move up
Engine complaints drop away after 2008. On the 2010 and 2011, suspension is the second most named component (30 and 32 complaints), followed by exterior lighting (20 and 29). No CX-7 year tops the 2011 for crash reports, with 8 of its complaints naming one.
One recall bears on the suspension complaints. Campaign 16V593 covers 2007-2012 CX-7s built from February 14, 2006 to May 9, 2012. Water may get into the front suspension ball joint, and dealers replace both front lower control arms for free. The campaign lists 190,102 vehicles. If the front end clunks or wanders, check this recall before you pay for suspension work.
The air bag recalls
Air bags are the most named component overall, with 262 complaints. NHTSA lists at least four recall campaigns for every CX-7 model year, and five campaigns are passenger air bag inflators marked DO NOT DRIVE:
- 17V429 (2007-2011 CX-7): also covers the CX-9 and 2009-2011 Mazda6. 205,377 vehicles in the whole campaign.
- 17V457 (2007-2012): 2012 CX-7, CX-9 and Mazda6 sold or registered in certain states. 79,402 vehicles in the campaign.
- 18V018 (2009-2010): the campaign's description also names the Mazda6 and CX-9. 70,227 vehicles in the campaign.
- 18V717 (2010-2012): the description also names the CX-9. 155,436 vehicles in the campaign.
- 19V782 (2007-2012): CX-7, CX-9 and Mazda6 whose inflators had already been replaced under an earlier recall. 69,879 vehicles in the campaign.
Because each of these campaigns covers other Mazda models too, the vehicle counts are not CX-7 totals.
CX-7 complaints and recalls by model year
These CX-7 totals come from NHTSA complaint records we checked on October 10, 2026. "Recalls" counts the campaigns NHTSA shows for that year, and a single campaign may stretch across several years.
| Year | Complaints | Report a crash | Report a fire | Recalls | Component named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2007 | 528 | 7 | 30 | 4 | Engine and engine cooling (185) |
| 2008 | 191 | 3 | 9 | 4 | Air bags (50) |
| 2009 | 65 | 0 | 1 | 5 | Air bags (16) |
| 2010 | 155 | 2 | 2 | 5 | Air bags (44) |
| 2011 | 153 | 8 | 0 | 4 | Air bags (42) |
| 2012 | 39 | 4 | 0 | 4 | Air bags (11) |
One more complaint is filed under a 2013 CX-7, though the EPA data ends at 2012. Since 2012 was the final CX-7 year, those owners have had the least time to file reports. The CX-7's low count leaves part of the story out.
Fix it or sell it?
Start with the free work, then compare the rest against what the car is worth running.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Air bag and control arm recalls are repaired free at a Mazda dealer. Our open recall guide covers selling with one still open.
- Engine gone on a 2007 or 2008? Get a written quote. If it comes close to what a running CX-7 of the same year sells for, the repairs cost more than it is worth guide walks through the decision.
- Front end noise on any year? Rule out recall 16V593 first.
Selling your CX-7 whole
- Gather your CX-7 details: the VIN, the mileage, what's wrong, and if it's front-wheel or all-wheel drive.
- Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where your CX-7 is parked and if its wheels turn, so the right truck shows up to load it. We offer free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Leave the parts on. Wheels, catalytic converter, the turbo: tell us about anything already removed.
- Keep the title and ID on hand for pickup. Plate rules for a sold CX-7 change from state to state; see after you sell. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- Which CX-7 model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- NHTSA held 1,132 CX-7 complaints on October 10, 2026, and 528 of them belong to the 2007. The 2008 has 191, the 2010 has 155 and the 2011 has 153. On the 2007, engine and engine cooling shows up more than any other part, in 185 complaints.
- Can I drive my CX-7 if it has an open air bag recall?
- Five CX-7 recall campaigns swap out the front passenger air bag inflator, and every one of them warns owners to keep the vehicle parked until it's fixed. Type the VIN in at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A dealer swaps the inflator and you pay nothing.
- Will you buy a CX-7 with a dead engine?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. For your CX-7, say if it rolls, which wheels drive it, and where it sits.
- Do I need to fix the recalls before I sell?
- No. You can sell the whole car as it sits. Recall repairs are free at a Mazda dealer, so if the car can be towed there, getting them done costs you nothing.
