Selling a dead or junk Mazda CX-9

Brakes, not the engine, top the CX-9's complaint list. Of 1,490 complaints owners filed with NHTSA, 405 name the service brakes, and 314 of those are on just three years: the 2010, 2011 and 2012. Engine complaints come second, mostly from the later turbo years.

A three-row SUV with worn brakes, a tired engine and a rusted suspension can cost more to fix than it's worth. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

The two CX-9 generations and their complaints

We added up what CX-9 owners reported to NHTSA on October 10, 2026. Treat it as owner reports, not a reliability rating. Each recall's vehicle total is for the full campaign, and the air bag ones reach the CX-7 and Mazda6 as well. Generation details come from Wikipedia, which notes that every CX-9 was built in Hiroshima yet the model was never sold in Japan.

First generation (TB): 2007-2015

Built on Ford's CD3 platform with a 3.5-liter V6 at launch, then a 3.7-liter V6, and a 6-speed automatic. These nine model years hold 1,060 complaints.

Brakes on the 2010-2012. Service brakes lead the 2009 through 2012. On the 2012, the CX-9's worst year at 221 complaints, 132 name the brakes. NHTSA lists no brake recall for the CX-9.

Suspension on the early cars. Suspension tops the 2007 and 2008, with 66 complaints between them. Recall 15V451000 covers 2007-2014 CX-9s whose front lower ball joints can corrode; dealers replace both lower control arms. That campaign counted 193,484 vehicles.

Passenger air bag inflators. Five campaigns replace them on first-generation cars: 17V429000 (2007-2011), 17V457000 (2012, cars sold or ever registered in certain states, among them Alabama, California and Florida), 18V018000 (2013), 18V717000 (2014-2015) and 19V782000 (cars whose inflator was already swapped once). All five carry NHTSA's do-not-drive warning.

Seats. Recall 09V066000 secured the power seat harness on 2007-2009 CX-9s with memory seats. Recall 10V051000 added a ground harness to heated front seats on the 2010, after the control circuit could overheat in extreme cold.

Second generation (TC): 2016-2023

Built from February 2016 to June 30, 2023, with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four rated at 227 hp and a 6-speed automatic. In 2017 it won the first IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award ever given. These years hold 430 complaints.

The engine leads every year from 2016 to 2021, with 214 complaints between them; the 2018 alone has 70. Recall 21V875000 replaced low-pressure fuel pumps on 2018-2019 CX-9s whose impeller could crack; that campaign counted 121,038 vehicles across several Mazda models. Recall 19V403000 repaired a 2018 wiring harness that could disable the passenger air bag, turn signals or engine starting. Recall 21V750000 replaced parts in second-row bench seats on 2020-2021 cars that could slide forward in a crash.

The CX-9 left the US market after 2023, replaced by the CX-90. The last CX-9 model years are still young, so owners haven't filed much on them yet.

Should you repair it?

  • Brake trouble on a 2010-2012? Get a written quote that covers the whole axle, not just pads. Our bad brakes guide covers when it's worth doing.
  • Front end clunking on a 2007-2014? Before buying new arms, check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup for the ball joint recall. Beyond that, see broken suspension.
  • Engine trouble on a 2016-2021? Check the fuel pump recall on a 2018-2019, then compare any engine quote with the blown engine guide.
  • Air bag recall open with a do-not-drive warning? Don't drive it to a shop or a buyer. Call a Mazda dealer, or sell it where it sits.

Complaints and recalls for each model year

CX-9 data from NHTSA complaint records on October 10, 2026. When one CX-9 campaign spans several years, each of those years lists it, but the grouped row counts it a single time.

Selling a whole CX-9

  1. Gather the VIN, mileage and the main problem. Say whether it's AWD and whether it rolls.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Let us know where it is. At home, in a garage, at a shop or out on the street. Tell us about locked-up brakes or a broken-down suspension, so we send a truck able to haul it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Sell the whole car as it sits. Leave the wheels, seats and converter in place, and tell us what's already gone.
  5. When the truck arrives, keep the title and your ID close. For plates and insurance, see after you sell.

Other Mazda SUVs: the CX-5, CX-7, Tribute, or every Mazda we cover.

Questions people ask

Which CX-9 years have the most brake complaints?
The 2012 (132), the 2011 (97) and the 2010 (85). Together they hold 314 of the 405 CX-9 complaints that name the service brakes, counted as of October 10, 2026.
Is there a recall for CX-9 ball joints?
Yes. Recall 15V451000 covers 2007-2014 CX-9s built from October 24, 2006 to December 28, 2013, whose front lower ball joints may corrode. Dealers replace both lower control arms. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Does my older CX-9 have an air bag recall?
It may. Five campaigns replace front passenger air bag inflators on first-generation CX-9s, and all five carry NHTSA's do-not-drive warning. A VIN lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls shows what is open.
Will you buy a CX-9 I've been told not to drive?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US, so it never has to be driven to us.
