Selling a wrecked or broken Mazda CX-70

Every one of the CX-70's four recall campaigns is on the 2025, its first model year, and every one of them also covers the bigger CX-90. All four fixes are free dealer software updates. So before you write off a CX-70 with a warning light, look up the VIN.

One generation, two powertrains

Wikipedia lists CX-70 production from 2024, at Mazda's Hōfu Plant No. 2 in Japan. It replaced the CX-9 and is related to the CX-60 and CX-80. Wikipedia gives its layout as a lengthwise front engine with all-wheel drive. Both versions use an 8-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic.

  • Mild hybrid: a 3.3-liter e-Skyactiv G turbo inline-six with a 0.33 kWh battery.
  • Plug-in hybrid (PHEV): a 2.5-liter four with a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and 26 miles of electric range.

The recalls split along those lines.

Plug-in hybrid: inverter software

Recall 24V817 says improper inverter software may light the malfunction indicators and cause a loss of drive. Dealers install new inverter software for free. Owner letters went out December 19, 2024. The campaign counts 14,902 vehicles, and that number includes 2024 CX-90 plug-ins, not just CX-70s.

Mild hybrid: the fuel gauge

Recall 25V568 covers mild hybrids whose fuel gauge may show the wrong level. Dealers update the body control module software. Letters went out October 24, 2025. Its 104,854 vehicles include 2024-2025 CX-90s.

Both: dash and engine software

Recall 24V814 covers SUVs with a Dash Electrical Supply Unit. At startup it can affect the defroster, the seat belt warning and the 360° view monitor. Dealers reprogram the unit. That campaign lists 80,915 vehicles across the CX-70 and CX-90. Recall 24V815 covers engine and powertrain control module software that may light the malfunction indicator; its 31,488 vehicles include 2024 CX-90s.

What owners have reported

NHTSA's complaint file held 54 CX-70 complaints as of October 10, 2026. Lane departure leads with 15, then forward collision avoidance with 7, then service brakes and steering at 4 each and the engine at 3. Two complaints describe a crash, four report injuries and four say the SUV was towed. These are reports owners filed, not test results, and the 2026 has had much less time to collect them.

Repair or sell?

  1. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2025, an open software recall may explain a warning light or a no-drive PHEV. See open recall for what that means when you sell.
  2. Crashed? If the insurer called your CX-70 a total loss, start with insurer totaled it.
  3. Plug-in battery trouble? The hybrid battery guide walks through the choice.
  4. Still financed? A new SUV often still has a lender on the title. Still owe on the loan covers how that sale works.

Selling it whole

  1. Have the VIN, the mileage and the trim ready, and say whether it is the mild hybrid or the PHEV.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Let us know where it's located and if the wheels roll, and we'll send a truck that fits the job. Your CX-70 can sit at home, at a body shop or at a tow yard.
  4. Leave the battery, wheels and body parts on. Mention anything already pulled.
  5. Keep the title and your ID with you on pickup day. States differ on plates; see after you sell.

Questions people ask

How many NHTSA complaints does the Mazda CX-70 have?
54 as of October 10, 2026: 51 on the 2025 and 3 on the 2026. Lane departure is the component named most, in 15 of them. The 2026 is so new that owners haven't had long to report problems.
My CX-70 has a warning light on. Could it be a recall?
It could. Two 2025 recalls describe software that can light the malfunction indicator: 24V815 for the engine and powertrain control modules, and 24V817 for the plug-in hybrid's inverter. Dealers fix both with a free software update. Check nhtsa.gov/recalls with your VIN and it lists any open recalls on your SUV.
Will you buy a CX-70 that was wrecked and won't drive?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us whether it rolls, which powertrain it has, and where it is parked.
Do I take the plug-in hybrid battery out before selling?
No. You sell the whole car as it sits, battery included. If some parts are already gone, mention that in your offer request.
