Selling a junk or non-running Mazda3

The 2010 Mazda3 has 718 complaints on file with NHTSA, more than the 2007 and 2008 put together. Body structure and seats are the two components owners of that year named most. Across all Mazda3 years from 2004 to 2026, owners have filed 3,108 complaints, and each generation's list looks different.

Four generations, four different complaint lists

Mazda3 owners filed these complaints with NHTSA, counted on October 10, 2026, and they are no reliability score. A recall's vehicle total covers its whole campaign, which often takes in other Mazda models. Generation dates come from Wikipedia.

First generation (BK), 2004-2009 model years

Built from June 2003 to November 2008 on Ford's C1 platform, shared with the Ford Focus Mk2. It replaced the 323 and Protege. These six model years hold 1,123 complaints.

Steering is the big one. On the 2007-2009, 215 complaints name it. Recall 10V374000 covers 2007-2009 Mazda3 and Mazda5 cars built from April 2007 through November 2008 for a sudden loss of power steering assist; dealers replaced the pump and lines. That campaign counted 215,000 vehicles across both models.

Air bags lead on the 2004, 2005 and 2006. Recall 04V468000 dealt with a cracked crash zone sensor housing on the 2004 that could let water in. Recall 21V494000 replaced steering wheel air bag covers on 2004-2007 cars because the plastic emblem could shatter when the bag deployed.

Wikipedia also notes that a small percentage of first-generation cars had pistons crack on their own, which it ties to manufacturing anomalies. Recall 11V329000 added a ground harness to wiper motors on 2008-2009 cars.

Second generation (BL), 2010-2013 model years

Built from November 2008 to June 2013. Four model years, 1,207 complaints, and 718 of them are on the 2010 alone. On that year, 124 complaints name structure and 117 name the seats.

Recall 16V644000 replaces both liftgate supports on 2010-2013 hatchbacks; its 580,455 vehicles include the Mazda5 and others. Recall 17V082000 reinforces manual seat lifter links on 2010-2011 cars and also covers the Mazda2. On the 2010, recall 09V126000 added a protector clip where the engine harness sat too close to the starter. The 2012 is the one year where power train leads, with 34 complaints.

Third generation (BM/BN), 2014-2018 model years

Built from June 2013 to 2018, with US sedans from Salamanca, Mexico, starting January 2014. These years hold 563 complaints, and the electrical system leads most of them.

Recall 15V621000 carried a do-not-drive warning for some 2015-2016 cars with a faulty fuel tank shut-off valve. Others: 17V393000 for parking brake actuator shafts that could corrode (shared with the Mazda6), 19V272000 for a wiper relay on 2016-2018 cars, and 23V487000 for rearview cameras that flicker on 2014-2018 cars (shared with the CX-3).

Fourth generation (BP), 2019 and later

Built since 2019, with a 24-volt mild hybrid system listed among its powertrains. So far the 2019-2026 cars add up to 215 complaints, and those younger cars haven't been out long.

The 2019 has 6 recall campaigns. They include 19V425000, for lug nuts that could loosen, and 19V497000, for engine-control software that could stall the engine (shared with the CX-5 and Mazda6). Recall 19V907000 updated the Smart Brake System on 2019-2020 cars after false obstacle detection. On the 2021, 19 complaints name the engine. Recall 25V357000 covers 2024-2025 cars whose air bag sensor could switch the bags off after a low battery; it also covers the CX-30.

The numbers, year by year

From NHTSA's complaint file, October 10, 2026. The recall column lists each Mazda3 year's campaigns, and one campaign can cover a few years. Where NHTSA's unknown-or-other category ranks first, the next component is shown.

Repair or sell?

You need two figures first: the repair quote on paper and what the car would bring after the fix. Once the repair cost nears that second figure, selling the car in one piece tends to be the better move.

  • Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before paying for anything. A 2015-2016 with an open fuel valve recall should not be driven until it's fixed.
  • No power steering on a 2007-2009? Ask a dealer about recall 10V374000 first.
  • Electrical gremlins on a 2013-2018? Our electrical problems guide walks through when a fix is worth it.
  • It won't start at all? See selling a car that doesn't run.

How a whole Mazda3 gets sold

  1. Keep the VIN, the odometer number and the problem handy. Let us know if the wheels turn.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it's parked. Street, driveway, garage or shop lot. If a wheel or tire is missing, tell us, and we'll send a truck that can still haul it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep your Mazda3 in one piece. Leave the catalytic converter, wheels and battery on it. Missing parts change the offer.
  5. When the truck shows up, give the driver the signed title and the keys. No title? See selling with no title.

Questions people ask

Why does the 2010 Mazda3 have so many complaints?
It has 718, the most of any Mazda3 year as of October 10, 2026. Structure (124) and seats (117) top its list. Two recalls touch those areas: 16V644000 for liftgate supports and 17V082000 for manual seat lifter links.
My 2007-2009 Mazda3 lost power steering. Was there a recall?
Yes. Under recall 10V374000, 2007-2009 Mazda3 and Mazda5 cars made from April 2, 2007 through November 30, 2008 can lose power steering assist without warning. Dealers replaced the pump and lines. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Do newer Mazda3s have fewer problems?
Late Mazda3 years show smaller counts for now, since those cars are younger and owners have had less time to file. Together the 2019-2026 cars have 215 complaints.
Will you buy a Mazda3 that doesn't run?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. You sell the whole car as it sits.
