Selling a junk or broken Mazda2
Mazda2 owners brought up steering more than anything else. It's in 14 of their 48 NHTSA complaints, tallied on October 10, 2026. All 48 sit on the 2011 to 2014 model years. Later years in the EPA data show recalls but no complaints.

Where the name comes from
Wikipedia says export versions of the Mazda Demio took the "Mazda2" badge starting with the second generation in 2002. A third generation followed in early 2007 and a fourth in September 2014. Every one is front-engine and front-wheel drive. EPA files the Mazda2 as a gasoline compact car, model years 2011 to 2021.
Problems, grouped by model year
2011-2014: steering, seats and the strut bolts
The 2011 has 17 complaints, more than any other year. Eight name the steering and four the seats. Its one recall, 17V082, covers the seat height lifter links on cars with a manual seat lifter. Dealers inspect the links, then add a reinforcement bracket or replace them. That campaign's 173,859 vehicles also include 2010-2011 Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 cars.
The 2012 has 9 complaints, led by air bags (3) and service brakes (2), and no recall.
The 2013 has 13 complaints. Steering leads with 4, then the electrical system and wheels with 2 each, and one complaint reports a fire. The 2014 has 9, with structure and suspension at 2 each; three report a crash and one an injury. Both years share recall 16V203, for Mazda2s built July 3, 2013 to August 8, 2014. Dealers inspect the lower nuts and bolts that hold the front strut to the steering knuckle. The campaign's 578 vehicles also include 2016 CX-3 and 2014-2016 CX-5 models.
Later years: two recalls, no complaints
Recall 21V875 covers 2019-2020 Mazda2s. The low-pressure fuel pump has an impeller that can crack and warp, and a dealer puts in a new pump at no charge. Letters went out July 18, 2022. Its 121,038 vehicles span several Mazda models, not just the Mazda2.
Recall 22V885 covers 2020-2021 Mazda2s whose headlights lack adjustment prevention caps, so they can be aimed wrong. Dealers fit the caps. The notice names only the Mazda2, and the campaign counts 226 vehicles.

| 2013 | 13 | Steering (4) | 1 |
| 2014 | 9 | Structure, suspension (2 each) | 1 |

| 2019 | 0 | none | 1 |
| 2020 | 0 | none | 2 |
| 2021 | 0 | none | 1 |
The later cars haven't been out as long, so their zeros mean less than the 17 on the 2011.
Worth fixing?
Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup first, since the fuel pump recall replaces the pump free of charge. Then set any repair quote beside what a running Mazda2 of the same year brings. When those two numbers sit close together, selling is often the better call; see old or high mileage and repairs cost more than it is worth.
How the sale works
- Note your Mazda2's VIN, mileage and what's wrong with it.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where the Mazda2 sits and if its wheels turn.
- Leave it whole. If parts are gone, see missing parts.
- Have the title ready. No title? Read selling with no title.
