Selling a broken or junk Mazda5
Steering is the top Mazda5 complaint at NHTSA, with 91 out of 412 as of October 10, 2026. The 2008 by itself has 35 of 67 pointing to the steering, and many 2007-2009 vans fall under a recall for power steering assist that cuts out all at once.

What the records cover
The EPA lists the Mazda5 for model years 2006 to 2015, as a midsize station wagon and a minivan, gasoline only. It is no longer sold. NHTSA's complaint file also holds 2 complaints filed under a 2016 model year. Our sources give no generation dates, so the sections below follow the years where the complaints cluster.
After steering, owners named tires (47 complaints) and suspension (40) most often.
2006: the launch year
No Mazda5 year tops the 2006, which has 78 complaints. Suspension leads with 16, then tires with 13 and the engine and cooling system with 8. NHTSA lists two recalls:
- 06V463: sliding door latches on vans registered in a list of mostly cold-weather states, from Alaska and Colorado to Michigan and Minnesota. Dealers fit modified latches. 9,800 vehicles in the campaign.
- 05V412: heat can build up in the exhaust system. Mazda gave owners a loaner while it made the repair. NHTSA's description of this campaign speaks of sport utility vehicles, so its 7,000-vehicle count may include other models.
2007-2010: steering takes over
These four years hold 249 complaints, and steering leads on three of them: 17 on the 2007, 35 on the 2008 and 17 on the 2009.
That lines up with recall 10V374. Power steering assist can drop out suddenly on the 2007-2009 Mazda3 and Mazda5 cars it covers, those built from April 2, 2007 through November 30, 2008. Dealers replace the power steering pump and lines free. The 215,000-vehicle count covers the whole campaign, Mazda3 included.
The 2009 and 2010 have a second recall, 10V600. On vans built from June 29, 2009 through April 28, 2010, water may not have been fully removed from the fuel pump's harness connector. Dealers inspect the connector, replace it if needed and repair the harness. 16,200 vehicles in the campaign.
The 2010 breaks the steering pattern: air bags lead there, with 13 of its 57 complaints.
2011-2016: fewer complaints, one liftgate recall
NHTSA holds just 1 complaint on a 2011 Mazda5. The 2012 has 37, led by the fuel and propulsion system (7). After that the counts fall: 24 on the 2013, 12 on the 2014, 9 on the 2015 and 2 on the 2016. Service brakes lead on the 2013 and 2014.
All four of the 2012-2015 years share recall 16V644, for the liftgate supports. Dealers replace both supports free, though NHTSA's notice said parts weren't available yet when it was filed; the recall began in April 2017. That 580,455 figure is for the full campaign, and 2010-2013 Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 cars are part of it too.

Repair it or let it go?
Start by running the Mazda5's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. If your 2007-2009 van was built inside the 10V374 window and the steering assist cuts out, that pump-and-lines job is a free recall remedy. The same goes for liftgate supports on a 2012-2015. An open recall doesn't stop a sale, as open recall explains.
Suspension complaints run highest on the 2006 (16) and the 2007 (10). If yours needs suspension work on top of other repairs, broken suspension walks through the trade-off. Ask for a repair quote on paper, then hold it up next to the price a working Mazda5 of that year brings. Even the newest of these vans is a 2015, so the gap can close fast.
How to sell the van whole
- Get the Mazda5's VIN, odometer number and list of problems together. Mention heavy steering or a van that won't start.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it's parked and whether the sliding doors and liftgate open. That helps the truck crew plan the load.
- Don't strip it. Leave the seats, wheels and catalytic converter in place, and say if anything is already missing.
- On Mazda5 pickup day, pass the driver the keys and title, then show a photo ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.

Questions people ask
- Which Mazda5 year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- As of October 10, 2026, the 2006 Mazda5, the first one sold, has the most complaints at 78. Behind it are the 2008 with 67, the 2009 with 64 and the 2007 with 61. The more recent vans haven't been out as long, so owners have filed less.
- Which Mazda5s were in the power steering recall?
- Recall 10V374 covers 2007-2009 Mazda5 and Mazda3 cars built from April 2, 2007 through November 30, 2008. They can suddenly lose power steering assist. A dealer puts in a new power steering pump and lines at no charge. Look up the VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Will you take a Mazda5 that won't start?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and there is free pickup anywhere in the US. Say where your Mazda5 is and if its wheels turn.
