Selling a broken or junk Mercedes-Benz GLE

GLE complaints and recall campaigns, 2016-2026

Campaigns reach across several years, so this column totals far more than 72. Recent GLEs are too new to have many reports yet.

2016-2018: steering, then the fuel pump control unit

These three years hold 218 complaints. The 2016 leads with steering (13), and it has 10 complaints that report a crash. Recall 17V241000 replaces a connector and inspects the electric power steering rack on 2016 GLEs, replacing the rack where needed. Its 58,323 vehicles also include the E400 coupe and GL63 AMG.

A later campaign reaches back over all of these years. Recall 22V955000 covers water getting into the fuel pump control unit on 2016-2019 GLEs and on 2012-2015 ML models. Dealers install a water drain plug and replace the unit as needed, and the campaign counts 348,183 vehicles across both models. The single death in the GLE file is on a 2018, a year where the power train leads its complaints.

2020-2022: the year everything changed

The 2019, with 11 complaints, is the quiet gap. Then the 2020, 2021 and 2022 add 252 complaints between them, and the engine is the top component on all three (34, 24 and 12). The electrical system comes second on the 2020 (30) and 2021 (17). The 2020 also has 9 complaints about vehicle speed control.

The recalls on these years are mostly GLE and GLS campaigns, so their counts cover both SUVs:

• 24V118000: 2020-2023 GLE 450 and GLS 450 transmissions may not fully downshift and can stall the engine. Software update. 105,071 vehicles.
• 24V207000 and 22V231000: the 48-volt ground connection, which dealers inspect and tighten. 116,020 and 21,306 vehicles.
• 22V680000: rear window trim bars on 2020-2022 models, inspected and secured. 161,000 vehicles.
• 20V671000: the middle rear seat belt buckle on five-seat 2020-2021 GLEs. Every model this campaign names is a GLE; 55,326 vehicles.

2023-2026: brakes on the 2024

These four years hold 108 complaints. Service brakes lead the 2024 with 9 of 44. Recall 23V178000 secures the rear door window trim bars on 2022-2023 GLE and GLS models (70,225 vehicles). Recall 23V880000 is about the fuel pump on 2021-2024 GLEs plus the C-Class, E-Class, S-Class and others; the dealer puts in a new pump.

Is a GLE worth fixing?

Check open recalls first. Put your GLE's VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2020-on GLE, a stall or a string of electrical warnings may line up with one of the campaigns above, and the notices say dealers do that work free of charge.

Past the recalls, it's a numbers question. Ask the shop to write down the GLE repair price, then check what a working GLE with your year and miles goes for. Selling your GLE as it sits

1. Note the VIN, the mileage and the symptoms, including any warning messages on the dash.
2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
3. Say where the GLE is and whether it pushes. One stuck in Park on a dead battery loads differently than one that rolls in Neutral.
4. Keep your GLE whole. Leave the wheels, battery and catalytic converter on it, and mention any part that's already gone.
5. When the GLE gets picked up, have the title and your photo ID ready. Your state decides what you do with the GLE plates, so see after you sell.
