Selling a junk or non-running Mercedes-Benz Metris
Most of the Metris's NHTSA file comes from its first year on sale. The 2016 holds 126 of the van's 212 complaints, counted as of October 10, 2026. Of those 126, 35 name the fuel/propulsion system and 20 the wipers.

The 2023 model year was the last Metris Mercedes-Benz sold in the US and Canada. Wikipedia gives two reasons: poor sales, and the end of the gasoline engine used only in the North American van. If yours is parked with a dead engine or a fuel leak, we buy whole non-running and junk cars and vans. Sell it whole, as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
One van, three stretches of model years
The Metris is the North American version of the third-generation Vito (W447). Wikipedia dates it January 2016 to 2023 here, with a 2.0-liter M274 gasoline four-cylinder. The automatics listed for the W447 are a 7-speed 7G-Tronic Plus and a 9-speed 9G-Tronic. EPA data lists cargo, long-wheelbase cargo and passenger versions, plus two US Postal versions.
With a single generation, this page groups model years where the complaints change:
| Model years | Complaints | What owners filed most |
|---|---|---|
| 2015-2016 | 127 | Fuel/propulsion, wipers, tires |
| 2017-2019 | 66 | Tires, wheels, steering |
| 2020-2023 | 19 | Fuel system, electrical, steering |
Owners sent in these complaints; they do not rate how reliable the van is. The newest vans have had less time to collect them.
2016: fuel and wipers
Fuel/propulsion (35) and wipers (20) lead the 2016. Two fires were reported, both on this year. Recall 18V837 lines up with the fuel complaints: the engine-bay fuel hose on 2016-2017 Metris vans may leak where it joins the underbody line. Dealers replace the hose and clamp; 12,383 vehicles.
Other recalls on early vans:
- 17V244: front seat belt pretensioners that may not work in a crash, 305 2016 vans.
- 18V335: a transmission support that may not be tightened to the body, which can damage the driveshaft, 7,433 2015-2017 vans.
- 19V290: power steering bolts on 2016-2017 vans first sold or later registered in certain states, including Connecticut and Illinois. Dealers swap aluminum bolts for steel; 9,471 vans.
2017-2019: tires and wheels
Tires lead the 2017 (11), 2018 (12) and 2019 (3), Wheels come second on the 2018 with 4. On the 2017, steering is second (5) and wheels third (4). Tires are the van's top component overall, at 40.
Recall 22V482 says the tire load capacity value on 2016-2018 vans is wrong. Dealers put on corrected labels and replace incorrect tires as needed; 24,359 vans. Recall 17V651 inspected front wheel bearing retaining rings on 109 2017 vans, because a bearing that isn't seated right could let a front wheel come off.
These years also share 22V066 (brake fluid reservoir that can detach, 28,743 vans from 2016-2021), 22V099 (rearview camera that can freeze, 17,093 vans from 2015-2018) and 22V134 (insecure fuel hose connections, 42,132 vans from 2017-2022).
2020-2023: fuel pumps
The 2022 has 9 complaints, and 5 name the gasoline fuel system. Two recalls replace the fuel pump, which may shut down and cut drive power: 23V444 on 2021-2023 Metris and Sprinter vans (20,500 vehicles) and 23V881 on 2022-2023 Metris vans (13,726). The 2023 has only 2 complaints, but they report 4 people injured.
Recall 25V463 fixes infotainment connections that can blank the rearview camera image on 2020-2023 vans, 43,422 of them. Recall 26V070, mailed from April 10, 2026, covers right-hand-drive vans whose air bag control unit can collect water.
Complaints and recalls, each Metris year
The 2015 shows up because some recalls and one complaint list it, though EPA data starts at 2016.
| Model year | Complaints | Injured | Recall campaigns | First-listed component (count) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2015 | 1 | 0 | 3 | Unknown or other (1) |
| 2016 | 126 | 1 | 13 | Fuel/propulsion (35) |
| 2017 | 29 | 0 | 14 | Tires (11) |
| 2018 | 28 | 0 | 10 | Tires (12) |
| 2019 | 9 | 0 | 12 | Tires (3) |
| 2020 | 7 | 0 | 8 | Electrical system (2) |
| 2021 | 1 | 0 | 7 | Equipment (1) |
| 2022 | 9 | 0 | 5 | Fuel system, gasoline (5) |
| 2023 | 2 | 4 | 4 | Air bags (1) |
Keep the van running, or sell it?
Set that quote next to the price a running Metris with similar year and miles brings. For a work van, add the days it sits.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Fuel hose and fuel pump campaigns cover most years.
- Smell fuel? Don't keep driving it. Ask a Mercedes-Benz dealer about 18V837 or 22V134.
- Recall still open and you'd rather sell? See open recall.
- Several vans to retire? Our guide to selling several junk cars covers doing it in one go.
Selling the Metris whole
- Note the VIN, mileage and version (cargo, passenger, long wheelbase) and what's wrong.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it's parked: a yard, a lot, the street or a shop. Mention if it rolls.
- Leave it as it is, racks, shelving and seats included.
- Bring the title. If the van is in a company's name, see titled to a business.

Questions people ask
- Which Metris model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2016, with 126 of the van's 212 as of October 10, 2026. The 2017 has 29 and the 2018 has 28. No later year passes 9, partly because newer vans have had less time to collect complaints.
- Is there a fuel pump recall on the Metris?
- Yes, two. 23V444 covers 2021-2023 Metris vans along with Sprinter models, 20,500 vehicles. 23V881 covers 2022-2023 Metris vans, 13,726 vehicles. If the fuel pump quits, the van can lose drive power, so dealers swap in a new pump. Put your Metris VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Can I sell a Metris that's registered to my business?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars and vans, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Our guide to vehicles titled to a business covers who signs and what to bring.
- Do I need to strip the shelving or seats out first?
- No. We take the complete van in its current state. Let us know if any parts are already off it.
