Selling a dead or junk Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Five model years carry the E-Class's complaint file. Owners have filed 5,454 complaints with NHTSA on E-Class cars from 1985 to 2026, and 2,449 of them are on the 2003 through 2007. For each of those E-Class years, fuel and propulsion is the component named most.

Known problems by generation

We pulled this E-Class count from NHTSA records on October 10, 2026. Recent E-Class model years are still young, so owners have logged little about them so far. Year groups use Wikipedia's generation dates and blur a bit at the ends.

W124, 1985-1995 model years

262 complaints in all. The "E-Class" name arrived with the facelifted W124 for the 1994 model year in the US. Electrical trouble leads on the 1992 through 1995, and it's worst on the 1995, at 105 out of 123 complaints.

W210, 1996-2002

608 complaints. This is the generation with the four oval headlights. Suspension is the most-named component on the 1996, 1997 and 1999; on the 1997 it's 48 of 114. Air bags make the top three on the 1999, 2000 and 2001.

W211, 2003-2009: fuel and the brake system

2,751 complaints, the largest group by far. Two patterns stand out.

Fuel and propulsion. It leads every year from 2003 to 2009. On the 2003-2007 alone, 921 complaints name it.

Service brakes. Brakes rank in the top three on the 2003 through 2006, with 286 complaints across those four years. That matches two recalls on the Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) system for certain 2003-2005 cars. Recall 04V296 had dealers inspect the SBC hydraulic unit and replace it if needed. Under recall 05V133, a worn wiring connection or an early pump fault could drop the system into its hydraulic back-up mode too soon. Dealers fitted the pump with a bracket and a new ground wire. Those campaigns count 143,387 and 204,000 vehicles and may include other models.

The sunroof recalls 19V918 and 22V954, which deal with glass that can come loose, also list 2003-2009 E-Class cars.

W212, 2010-2016: air bags

1,414 complaints, with air bags the top component on all seven years. The 2011 has 139 air bag complaints out of 286. NHTSA lists several air bag campaigns here, including 16V081 (driver inflator, a 711,159-vehicle campaign that also covers ML, GL, R-Class and Chrysler vehicles) and 17V627 (extra grounding on steering parts, 495,290 vehicles across many Mercedes models).

One recall is easy to spot from outside. Recall 15V088 added four retaining clips to the hood's rubber seal on certain 2013-2015 E350 sedans, E350 4Matic sedans and wagons, E400 Hybrid sedans and 2013-2014 E550 4Matic sedans, plus CLS models. The 2014 also shows 15 complaints flagged for fire, out of 304.

W213, 2017-2023

392 complaints. Wikipedia notes this generation switched back to inline six-cylinder engines. The engine leads on the 2017 (33 of 167). Recall campaigns run high, between 16 and 22 a year for 2017 through 2021, because many of them span the whole lineup. Recall 17V114 added a starter fuse to 2017 E300 and E400 4Matic cars, among others.

W214, 2024-2026

27 complaints so far. Watch for recall 24V941: a "do not drive" notice on 17 vehicles, 2025 E 350, E 350 4MATIC and E 450 4MATIC cars, including the E 450 4MATIC wagon. The camber strut bracket may have been improperly welded to the rear axle carrier. Dealers replace the carrier.

Fix the E-Class, or sell it?

  1. First, check your E-Class VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup. Each E-Class remedy cited here is listed at no cost.
  2. 2003-2006 with a brake warning? Ask a dealer whether the SBC recalls were done on your car. If they were and the warning is back, get a written quote. Our bad brakes guide covers what to weigh.
  3. 2003-2009 with fuel system trouble? Fuel and propulsion is the pattern in the data. Get the problem diagnosed before you assume the engine is gone.
  4. Quote higher than the car's running value? That's the point to sell. See repairs cost more than it is worth.

How to sell an E-Class as it sits

  1. Make a note of the VIN, the miles and what still works or doesn't.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where the truck meets the car: a driveway, a parking garage, a back lot. Say if a wheel is locked or the car won't shift out of Park.
  4. Leave the parts in place. Your E-Class should still have its wheels, battery and catalytic converters. Say if something is already gone.
  5. Give the driver the title, any keys you still have, and a photo ID. Then check after you sell for your state's plate and insurance steps.

Questions people ask

Which E-Class years have the most complaints?
On October 10, 2026, the 2006 was on top at 536 complaints. After it came the 2005 (527), the 2004 (487), the 2003 (466) and the 2007 (433). The fuel and propulsion system is the top component on all five. The newest E-Class sedans just haven't logged enough miles yet to gather many reports.
What was the Sensotronic Brake Control recall?
Two recalls covered the SBC brake system on certain 2003-2005 E-Class cars. 04V296 had dealers inspect the SBC hydraulic unit and replace it if needed. Under 05V133, the pump unit got a bracket and a new ground wire, because the system could drop into its hydraulic back-up mode too soon. Both campaigns may include other Mercedes models.
Will you take an E-Class that hasn't run in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us the E-Class's location and whether it can be rolled by hand.
