Selling a dead Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Half the S-Class's complaint file sits on seven model years. Of 1,290 complaints owners have filed with NHTSA on S-Class cars from 1984 to 2025, 644 are on the 2000 through 2006, and the electrical system tops every one of those years.

Recalls on those years include the instrument cluster (06V028) and the trunk floor mats (02V338), and the suspension draws complaints too. If yours has reached that point, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

S-Class complaints and recalls, year by year

NHTSA has no complaints on file for the 1985 model year.

What goes wrong, generation by generation

Year groups follow Wikipedia's production dates for each generation, so the boundaries are approximate.

W126 and W140, 1984-1999

203 complaints over sixteen model years, so this era barely registers. The W140 years from 1994 to 1996 lean electrical; the 1995 has 41 electrical complaints out of 59. Suspension leads the 1997.

W220, 2000-2006: electrical and suspension

644 complaints. On the 2000-2002 alone, 184 complaints name the electrical system and 88 name the suspension. Interior lighting also makes the top three on the 2000 and 2001.

Three recalls on these cars are electrical:

  • 06V028: instrument clusters with electrical faults on 2000-2005 cars. Dealers replaced the cluster modules. The campaign counts 36,911 vehicles.
  • 04V227: an undersized conductor in the blower motor fuse holder on 2000-2001 cars, 54,454 vehicles.
  • 02V338: static build-up in the trunk floor mats on 2000-2001 cars. Dealers added an insulation panel between the carpet and the battery. 65,000 vehicles.

Each of these campaigns may include other Mercedes models.

W221, 2007-2013

170 complaints. The 2007 leads with 66, and the power train tops its list. Later years in this group are quiet: the 2009 has 5 complaints and the 2013 has 9.

W222, 2014-2020

176 complaints, spread thin, while recall campaigns climb to 14 on the 2018. Recall 26V216 covers drive shafts on 2018-2020 S 450 and S 560 4MATIC models, and its 24,092 vehicles include E-Class models. Dealers inspect and replace the drive shaft as needed.

W223, 2021-2025

97 complaints, and Wikipedia lists a 9-speed 9G-Tronic automatic for this generation. The recall list is long:

  • 25V116 and 26V638: front brake hoses can burst and let fluid out. The first covers certain 2021-2023 S 500 and S 580 cars (20,339 vehicles). The second covers certain 2022-2025 S 500, S 580, Maybach and AMG S 63 E Performance cars (30,064), with owner letters expected November 27, 2026.
  • 24V704: if the engine's Camtronic system has a mechanical fault, the engine software on 2021-2023 S580 and Maybach S580 cars needs an update. 27,190 vehicles.
  • 23V445: fuel pump replacement on 2021-2023 cars, in a 143,551-vehicle campaign spread across many Mercedes models.

Selling an S-Class whole

  1. Jot down: the VIN, the miles, and if it cranks, goes into gear and rolls.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us its spot. Mention it if the car has dropped low on its suspension, so the driver knows ahead of time.
  4. Leave it complete, wheels and converters included. Tell us what's already missing.
  5. When the driver arrives, keep your title and a photo ID on hand. See after you sell for state plate rules.

Repair the S-Class or sell it?

  1. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2021 or newer there may be several open. NHTSA's remedy text for those S-Class campaigns calls the repair free.
  2. Electrical trouble on a 2000-2006? Our electrical problems guide covers when diagnosis is worth paying for.
  3. Sagging on a W220? Suspension is the second most-named component on the 2000-2003. See broken suspension before you order parts.
  4. Huge repair bill on an older S-Class? Check it against the price a running one of that year brings. If those S-Class numbers are close, selling it whole is usually the better move.

Other Mercedes sedans: the E-Class, the CL-Class and the EQS, or every Mercedes-Benz model we cover.

Questions people ask

Which S-Class years have the most complaints?
On October 10, 2026, the 2001 stood at 183 complaints, the 2000 at 159 and the 2002 at 120. Those are early years of the W220 generation. The latest S-Class years are young, so owners have filed fewer reports on them.
Are there recalls on the newest S-Class?
Yes. NHTSA lists 22 recall campaigns for the 2021 model year. They include a front brake hose replacement (25V116) and an engine software update for S580 models (24V704). Many campaigns also cover other Mercedes models.
Will you buy an S-Class sitting on a collapsed suspension?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us the car sits low so the driver brings the right equipment.
