Selling a junk car in Oxford

Oxford's zoning code puts a number on it: "No more than two junked vehicles may be stored outside an enclosed structure." Those two "shall be screened from view of the primary public road right-of-way." For this rule, Section 3.2 calls a vehicle junked when it is mechanically inoperable, wrecked or partially dismantled, "and has been unregistered for a period longer than 30 days." If you are down to one dead car and would rather not build a fence for it, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits.

The stricter residential rule

Chapter 87 reads tighter than the zoning cap. Section 87-46 says it is unlawful for the owner or occupant of residential property "to utilize the premises of such residential property for the open storage of any junked vehicle." It also makes removing junked items every owner's duty "upon notice from the mayor or his authorized representative." Here, junked means "incapable of being moved under its own power."

Since the two sections read differently, ask the city which one governs your lot before leaning on the two-car allowance. The zoning definitions in Section 10.2 go wider still: a vehicle "without [a] current license tag" counts once it is "(a) wrecked, (b) dismantled, (c) partially dismantled, or (d) inoperative."

Street time and towing

A car that quits on an Oxford street has a limit. Section 87-43 makes it unlawful to park "upon any street within the city for a continuous period of time in excess of 72 hours."

Under Section 102-81, police may move a vehicle that is illegally parked and "a definite hazard or obstruction" to traffic. When the registration shows who owns the car, the officer must mail that person a letter about the removal that says where the car went. To get it out, the owner must "furnish evidence of his identity and ownership, sign a receipt and pay the towing bill," plus storage charged by the day at the rate the section sets. Settling that bill does not clear a fine for the violation. See towed or impounded.

A yard full of dead cars

Section 62-31 reaches past two cars. An automobile graveyard within half a mile of a paved highway in the city, and in sight of it, must be removed at its owner's expense. Working wrecking yards are exempt, but one that stops operating for 90 days loses the exemption for the cars left behind. Clearing several? Read several junk cars.

Tag and title in Lafayette County

An Oxford seller unbolts the plate as the title is signed over and brings it to the Lafayette County Tax Collector. Tag credit there is figured from the drop-off date, and any county will honor it.

Complete the assignment apart from the buyer's own two lines, printed name and signature, and do not leave the buyer-name spot empty. Without the title, nothing moves: a replacement on Form 78-006 costs $9.00. For a car bound for the crusher, Mississippi issues a Junked Certificate of Title once the title is surrendered.

Questions people ask

Oxford zoning allows two junked cars outside. Does that cover my house?
Section 3.2 caps outdoor junked-vehicle storage at two, screened from the primary public road. Section 87-46 separately bars open storage of any junked vehicle on residential property, so ask the city which rule governs your lot.
How long can a car be left on an Oxford street?
Section 87-43 bars parking a vehicle on any city street for a continuous period over 72 hours.
What do Oxford police require before releasing a towed car?
Under Section 102-81 you show identity and ownership, sign a receipt, pay the towing bill and pay daily storage to the police department. Paying does not clear any fine for the underlying violation.
