Southaven curb rules

Two parking sections land on the owner, not only the driver:

• Section 9-407: if a car is parked illegally and "the identity of the driver cannot be determined," the registered owner "shall be held prima facie responsible." A Southaven car that stalled at the curb and stayed put is still your ticket.
• Section 9-436: sidewalks are off limits for parking except where the mayor and board of aldermen have marked public spaces. Shoving a stalled car onto the sidewalk to clear the lane runs into this rule.

The state adds a deadline. DOR treats a car as abandoned after five straight days unattended on any public street, highway or other public ground.

Gaps in what we found

None of the Southaven sections we read set a yard-storage rule or a removal deadline for a junk car on private land. Another Southaven ordinance could apply, so ask City Hall before a dead car sits outside for weeks.

Your plate, your county office

In Mississippi the plate leaves with the seller. Remove it when you sign over the title and take it to the DeSoto County Tax Collector, which applies credit for the tag fee you have not used. The credit is dated from the day the tag is handed in, and it transfers to any county. Had a toll notice turn up after your Southaven sale? Title steps

Fill out every section of the title assignment except two that belong to the buyer: printed name and signature. You can't leave the buyer's name empty for someone to write in later. DOR says that breaks Mississippi law. When the Southaven buyer is your grandchild, grandparent, sibling, child, parent or spouse, add an "Affidavit of Relationship" to the papers.
