Selling a non-running car in Londonderry

Right now, a Londonderry car that wouldn't pass inspection faces no sticker deadline. After a federal court injunction and losing its contractor, New Hampshire put its annual state inspection program on hold until further notice. Stations may not issue state inspection stickers, and cars need no annual state inspection at this time.

What the inspection pause does and does not change

The DMV's notice dates from February 13, 2026, and it was still the top notice in a September 2026 copy of the page. Three points from it:

  • No state sticker is required, and none can be issued.
  • The state calls the status subject to change and is appealing the ruling.
  • Any car you drive in New Hampshire still has to be kept safe. Those duties are in RSA chapter 266.

So a car with rusted brake lines or a rotted frame is still unsafe to drive. Sell it from the driveway instead. Our failed inspection or rust guide covers cars in that shape.

Londonderry's own rules

Londonderry's town code didn't turn up online. We cover state law here, but the town could also limit unregistered or disabled cars kept at a home. Check with the town before relying on anything here.

Signing the car over

A car from model year 2000 or later carries a New Hampshire title. Under RSA 261:14 the owner assigns it to the buyer at delivery. On the title's back, enter the buyer's name, the buyer's address and today's odometer reading. Seller and buyer both sign, and the buyer takes it.

If the car is older than that, the state never titled it. A Londonderry seller hands over the TDMV 22A bill of sale, plus a TDMV 19A "Verification of Vehicle Identification" or a copy of a past registration or title.

Need a replacement title first? The duplicate costs $35 from January 1, 2026, on form TDMV 18. The DMV quotes about 30 to 50 calendar days to issue a title once it has the application, so start early if you are short a title. See junk car with no title.

Plates and registration

The plates stay with you, and the registration expires on the sale. Keep the expired registration. It earns transfer credit at the town or city clerk, who handles registrations and can finish the whole job when there is a title or the car is title-exempt. The state DMV is the office that issues titles.

Questions people ask

Does my Londonderry car need a state inspection sticker?
Not at the moment. Londonderry drivers have no yearly state inspection for now. It stalled after a federal court injunction and after the state lost its contractor. Stations may not issue state stickers. The state says the status can change and it is appealing.
Can I still drive a car that would have failed inspection?
Drivers must still keep any vehicle driven in New Hampshire safe, under the safety requirements in RSA chapter 266. A car that is unsafe should not be driven, sticker or not.
Does Londonderry have its own junk-car rule?
We found no online copy of Londonderry's town code, so this follows New Hampshire law. Londonderry could set its own rules, so ask the town.
