Selling a dead car in Derry, New Hampshire

If the dead car in your Derry driveway was built before model year 2000, there is no title to find. New Hampshire never issued one. RSA 261:3 exempts those cars (heavy trucks over 18,000 lb excepted), and a bill of sale does the job instead. Plenty of Derry sellers spend a week hunting for a paper that never existed.

Papers for a car with no title

The DMV lists what the seller of a title-exempt car provides:

  • form TDMV 22A, the "Report of Sale or Transfer of a Non-Titled Motor Vehicle", filled out and signed correctly
  • with it, a properly filled Verification of Vehicle Identification (TDMV 19A), or a copy of the previous registration or title

The DMV's selling page puts it another way: a bill of sale with a current or expired New Hampshire registration, or a title. An old expired registration in the glovebox is worth keeping. See our bill of sale guide for filling one in.

Papers for a 2000 or newer car

These are titled. The title goes to the buyer at the time of sale. On its back, write the buyer's name, address and the odometer reading as it stands, then the two of you sign. If the title has gone missing, file an Application for Duplicate Title (TDMV 18). If more than one person owned the car, all of them sign. If a lien was recorded, attach a Release of Lien (TDMV 20). The fee rose from $25 to $35 on January 1, 2026, though a DMV FAQ copy still showed $25.00. Expect roughly 30 to 50 calendar days once the DMV has the application.

A facility that crushes, shreds, bales or shears a car takes the title assigned to it, unless the car is title-exempt. So a pre-2000 car goes to the crusher on its bill of sale.

Derry's rules on keeping a dead car

We could not find Derry's town code online. We only cover state law here. Derry could have rules of its own on junk or unregistered cars, so ask the town first.

The state has no annual inspection to worry about for now. The program is suspended until further notice, and stations may not issue state inspection stickers. Drivers must still keep any car they drive in New Hampshire safe under RSA chapter 266, and the state says the status can change.

Your plates after the sale

They stay with you. Once the car has a new owner, its registration ends. Hang on to the expired registration. Move the plates to your next vehicle and the Derry town clerk uses it to give you transfer credit. More in after you sell.

Close to Derry

In a straight line, Londonderry sits roughly 5.6 miles off, Salem roughly 7.5 and Manchester roughly 10.6. The New Hampshire page has the statewide rules.

Getting an offer

Call (877) 421-6008 or ask online. Start with the model year, because it settles if you need a title or a bill of sale. After that, the make, model, miles and if it starts. We'll come to your Derry car in a garage, a side yard, or parked in a lot by the old depot.

Questions people ask

Why is there no title for my 1990s car in Derry?
New Hampshire does not title a motor vehicle whose model year is before 2000, except heavy trucks over 18,000 lb. Nothing is missing. The seller gives the buyer a bill of sale instead.
What papers do I hand over for a car with no title?
In Derry the seller completes the "Report of Sale or Transfer of a Non-Titled Motor Vehicle" (TDMV 22A). Add a correctly completed Verification of Vehicle Identification (TDMV 19A), or else a copy of the prior registration or title.
Does Derry have its own junk-car ordinance?
Derry's town code wasn't online when we looked, so we go by state law. Derry could set rules of its own, so ask the town before you count on any deadline.
Do I have to get the car inspected before selling?
Not right now. New Hampshire suspended its annual state inspection program until further notice, and stations may not issue state inspection stickers. The state says this can change.
