Selling a dead or junk car in Valley Stream

A car someone else left on your Valley Stream property becomes "abandoned" under New York law once it has sat there four days without your permission. A car that is yours, sitting dead on your own lot, falls outside that law entirely. The state leaves it to local rules, and we could not find Valley Stream's code online. So this page sets out what the state says and flags where local rules may add more.

We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You can sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US, whether the car is near the park in the photo or on a side street by the Lynbrook line.

Two cases: whose car it is

It's someone else's car. Past the 96-hour mark on your land with no permission, Vehicle and Traffic Law 1224 calls it abandoned, and the local authority where it sits takes custody. A plateless one whose wholesale value is $2,250 or under becomes that authority's property at once. Any other car triggers a letter to the last owner, and if Valley Stream hears nothing back, auction or bid can follow ten days on. Our page on a car abandoned on your property goes further.

It's your car. The four-day rule stops at your own property line. Any limit on a dead or unregistered car in a Valley Stream yard would come from local law, so ask the village before you assume there is none.

Who is allowed to sell

New York gives the signing power only to whoever appears on the title. When it shows two names, one of them signing is enough. A company car gets sold by someone inside the company. If the name on the paper isn't yours, start with car not in your name.

Signing it over

Valley Stream sellers complete and sign the title's back transfer section, then add their signature to MV-912, the bill of sale New York uses. Neither one gets notarized. Proof of sale plus proof of ownership is all a New York transfer needs. Handing the car to family for free? Write $0 on the MV-912 for a Valley Stream gift, and add the DTF-802 Statement of Transaction.

Valley Stream sellers whose title vanished during a move can order a replacement on the MV-902. The fee is $20.00. Valley Stream owners can apply online, in person at an office, or by mail with an ID copy included. Albany prints the new title and posts it.

Plates and the insurance letter

The plates go with you, not with the buyer. Remove them and the windshield sticker. Then turn them in, or move them to a different car right away. That has to happen while coverage is still active. If the insurance ends first, the registration can be suspended, and your license can go too. File the FS-6T receipt with your MV-912 copy. With no New York notice-of-sale form to file, those two papers are how a Valley Stream seller replies to a lapse letter.

Getting an offer

Reach us online or at (877) 421-6008 with the car's model and year, the miles, if it cranks, and the owner named on the title. After you say yes, a truck heads to whichever Valley Stream curb or driveway the car is on.

Questions people ask

Someone left a dead car in my Valley Stream driveway. When is it abandoned?
Four days. Under Vehicle and Traffic Law 1224, a Valley Stream car parked on someone else's land past 96 hours without leave is abandoned, and the local authority there takes custody.
Can I sell a car that is in my relative's name?
Not on your own signature. New York lets only a titled owner sell. With two owners on the title, one signature from either is enough, and a company car is sold by someone in the company.
Does Valley Stream have its own rules for junk cars?
We found no copy of Valley Stream's code online. When a junk car sits on its owner's own Valley Stream lot, local rules govern, and they may reach further than this page does.
