Selling a broken Nissan 370Z
If your 2009 or 2010 370Z won't start, look at the steering lock before you assume the engine is gone. Nissan replaced the electronic steering column lock on these cars in a 2013 service campaign, because excess oil inside the unit could keep the car from starting. A dealer can check your VIN.

The steering lock campaign
Nissan published campaign P3208 on March 7, 2013. It covered 2009-2010 370Zs and 2009-2011 GT-Rs. A separate Nissan dealer broadcast counted about 22,000 affected cars from the 2009 and 2010 model years. The fix was a new steering lock unit.
NHTSA's complaints line up with it. Steering is the component named most on the 2009, 2010 and 2011, and 136 of the 303 complaints on those years mention both a steering lock and a start problem. The 2009 has 153 complaints, the most of any year. Owners who gave a mileage reported a median of 39,650 miles on the 2009 and 40,000 on the 2010.
The clutch
Of 346 complaints on 2009-2014 cars, 91 mention the clutch. Power train is the top component on every year from 2012 to 2014. We found no Nissan recall or owner campaign for 370Z clutches. By 2020, Nissan's press kit described an EXEDY high-performance clutch on manual cars.
Two small recalls
- 11V538, 2011: a programming error left the power window switch controller out of spec, so a closing window needed more force than it should before it reversed. It covered 1,788 cars, including Infiniti G37 coupes; only 370Zs built from July 2 to August 29, 2011, are in it.
- 18V153, 2018: the driver's side curtain air bag may have been installed incorrectly on 22 cars.

The steering lock campaign is not counted as a recall here because it was a service campaign.
Before you decide
- Won't start? On a 2009-2010, rule out the steering lock first. Our non-running car guide covers what else to check.
- Clutch slipping or grinding? Get a written quote. On a manual Z that's otherwise sound, it may be worth doing.
- Already pulled parts off? That's fine, but read selling a car with missing parts so the offer matches what's there.
- Any year: look up open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Selling your 370Z whole
Have the VIN, the mileage, the gearbox, the trim (base, Sport, NISMO or roadster) and a plain account of what's wrong. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008 if you'd rather talk. Tell us where the car sits, whether it rolls, and whether it's been lowered, because that changes how it gets loaded.
Leave it complete, aftermarket parts included, and tell us what's been changed. At pickup you sign over the title and show ID. Plates and insurance depend on your state; after you sell explains them.
Questions people ask
- My 2009 or 2010 370Z won't start. Could it be the steering lock?
- It could. Nissan's 2013 campaign P3208 replaced the electronic steering column lock on 2009-2010 370Zs because excess oil inside the unit could stop the car from starting. Of 303 NHTSA complaints on 2009-2011 cars, 136 mention both a steering lock and a start problem. A Nissan dealer can tell you whether your VIN was done.
- Is there a recall for 370Z clutch problems?
- No. Owners have filed clutch complaints, 91 of 346 on the 2009-2014 cars, but we found no Nissan recall or owner campaign for the 370Z clutch.
- Do you buy modified or track-used 370Zs?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, modified ones included. List the aftermarket parts when you ask for an offer, and leave them on the car.
- Is there a 2021 370Z?
- Sources disagree. Nissan and Wikipedia give 2009-2020 as the North American model years, while the EPA list runs to 2021. NHTSA has no complaints on file for a 2020 or 2021 370Z.
