Selling a broken-down Nissan Murano
Murano trouble in NHTSA's records clusters in two stretches: the 2003-2007 first generation, with its seat, stalling and CVT complaints, and the 2015-2018 years, with a CVT warranty extension and brake-module fire recalls. You can sell either one as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, pickup is free anywhere in the US, and nothing has to come off first.

There is no 2008 Murano. Nissan went straight from the 2007 to the 2009, though NHTSA still files 5 complaints under 2008.
2003-2007: seats, stalls and an early CVT
These five years hold 3,944 of the Murano's 5,960 complaints, about two in three. Every one had the 3.5-liter V6 and a CVT.
Seat frames. Seats lead the complaint count on the 2005, 2006 and 2007. On the 2005 alone, 445 of 987 complaints name the seats. Across the five years, 671 seat complaints mention a seat frame, bracket, anchor or weld. NHTSA shows no recall for any of it.
Stalling. In complaints on these years, 236 mention the engine stalling. Recall 09V169, from May 2009, reached 362,891 Muranos built for 2003-2007. The intake air ducts age and shrink, pull loose from the resonator as the engine moves, and the engine can stall.
The transmission. Of 800 complaints on the 2003, 233 list the power train and 181 mention the CVT or transmission by name. Nissan's 2010 warranty booklet printed a notice raising CVT coverage to 10 years or 120,000 miles, for transmission repair, replacement and related towing. We could not confirm which Murano VINs it reached, and ten years have now passed on every one of them.
The fuel tank. Recall 06V003 (January 2006, 205,000 SUVs) covers 2003-2006 Muranos: a sharp object flung back by a front tire can puncture the front edge of the fuel tank.
2009-2014: brake pedals that sink
The second Murano arrived as a 2009 with a 265-horsepower V6 and a new Xtronic CVT. A convertible, the CrossCabriolet, was sold for 2011 through 2014.
Brakes are the 2009's story. Of its 635 complaints, 258 list service brakes and 149 describe a pedal that went soft or sank toward the floor. Recall 18V916, filed in December 2018, covers 86,265 Muranos from 2009. Valves in the ABS hydraulic unit can react with brake fluid that contains certain anti-corrosion additives and stop closing properly, so the pedal has to travel farther to stop the car. Complaints drop sharply after that year: 193 on the 2010 and 74 on the 2013.
2015-2024: the ABS actuator, a hybrid, and a late extension
Two recalls dominate the third generation. Recall 18V601 (September 2018) and its expansion 19V807 (November 2019) cover 2015-2018 Muranos whose ABS actuator pump can leak brake fluid onto its own circuit board. That short circuit is a fire risk, and both recalls tell owners to keep the SUV parked outside until it is fixed.
The Murano Hybrid arrived for 2016 with a 2.5-liter four, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. Recall 21V774 (October 2021) is written for "2015-2016 Murano Hybrid" vehicles, even though the Hybrid was introduced for 2016. Their control software can shut down the hybrid system and the engine, leaving no drive power.
Then the transmission. Under a Nissan bulletin dated October 3, 2025, the CVT on a 2015-2018 Murano is covered for 84 months and 84,000 miles, whichever is reached first, where the original limit was 60 months and 60,000. Covered parts: the transmission and everything inside it, plus the cooler kit, the torque converter, its valve body and the control computer. Owners who left the class-action settlement are not covered, so a dealer checks it VIN by VIN.
2025 on: no V6, no CVT
Smyrna began building the fourth Murano on December 3, 2024. It drops both the V6 and the CVT for a 241-horsepower 2.0-liter VC-Turbo and a nine-speed automatic. NHTSA holds 26 complaints so far, and recall 25V821 covers 2025 Muranos whose rearview camera may show nothing at startup.

Repair it or sell it?
We found no sourced repair price for these faults, so here is a checklist instead.
- Run the VIN first at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see what is still open. On a 2015-2018, the ABS actuator recalls matter most.
- A first-generation Murano that stalls may have the loose intake duct from recall 09V169 rather than a failed engine. Check that before writing it off.
- A dead CVT on a 2015-2018? Ask a Nissan dealer whether the 84-month extension still covers your VIN. If it doesn't, get a written quote and compare it with what the same Murano sells for when it runs. Our bad transmission guide walks through that decision.
- A broken seat frame has no recall, and it doesn't stop a sale.
For what changes the offer on a car that doesn't run, see what a junk car is worth.
Selling a Murano that won't run
Have the VIN, the mileage and a plain description of the fault ready. "CVT whines and won't pull" is enough. Then get an offer online or by phone at (877) 421-6008.
Say where the SUV is parked and whether it rolls and steers. Leave everything on it, the hybrid battery included on a Hybrid. Anything already missing? Tell us; it moves the offer.
Keep the title, your driver's license or other photo ID, and every key you have for the day it's collected. Plate rules differ by state; after you sell covers them. Lost the title? Start with selling a junk car with no title. Or compare the Rogue, Pathfinder and every other Nissan.
Questions people ask
- Which Murano model years draw the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2005 leads with 987. The 2006 (803), 2003 (800), 2004 (678) and 2007 (676) follow, so the whole first generation sits at the top. Among later Muranos, the 2009 stands out with 635, and 258 of those list the service brakes.
- Was a 2003-2007 Murano ever recalled for broken seat frames?
- No. Seats are the component named most across all Murano complaints, and 671 seat complaints from 2003-2007 mention a seat frame, bracket, anchor or weld, but NHTSA lists no recall for them. The seat-related campaign on file for those years, 06V048, deals with rear seat belts on 2003-2006 models.
- Does Nissan's October 2025 CVT extension cover my Murano?
- Only a 2015-2018 Murano. Its CVT coverage runs seven years (84 months) or 84,000 miles, whichever is first, up from 60 months and 60,000. Nissan says owners who left the class-action settlement are not covered, so a dealer has to look up your VIN. Every 2015-2018 Murano is now around eight years old or older, so most have run past the 84 months.
- Should my 2015-2018 Murano be parked outside?
- If recall 18V601 or 19V807 is still open on it, yes. Both cover a leak in the ABS actuator that can short its circuit board and start a fire, and both tell owners to park outdoors until the repair is done. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Will you take a Murano that won't move, or a Murano Hybrid?
- Yes to both. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us what failed, whether it rolls, and where it's parked.
