Selling a Nissan Rogue that won't run

Most of the engine and transmission trouble owners report on the Rogue falls in two places: power train complaints, the category that covers the CVT, on 2008-2018 models, and the 1.5-liter three-cylinder VC-Turbo engine on 2022 and newer ones, which now carries three recalls. If yours failed in one of those spots, or anywhere else, it doesn't have to be fixed before it goes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Which Rogue do you have?

Nissan has sold three generations of the Rogue in the US. Each one has its own weak spots. Every count on this page is a complaint filed with NHTSA for that model year, taken from the agency's bulk complaint file on October 10, 2026.

2008-2013: the first Rogue (S35)

The 2008 came as a Rogue S or SL, with a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter four and a CVT as standard. Nissan built it in Kyushu, Japan. The same car stayed on sale as the Rogue Select for 2014 and 2015, next to the redesigned model.

These six model years hold 2,321 complaints, and 844 of them list the power train, more than any other part of the car. Nissan's owners site lists 10 years or 120,000 miles of CVT coverage for its 2003-2010 models with a CVT. That leaves out the 2011-2013 Rogues, and even a 2010 is now 16 model years old.

Recall 15V032 covers 2008-2013 Rogues and the 2014 Rogue Select. Water, snow and road salt can get through the carpet to a wiring harness, and NHTSA's notice warns that the resulting short circuit is a fire risk.

2014-2020: the Smyrna years (T32)

For 2014 the Rogue moved to Smyrna, Tennessee, and became the first vehicle on the CMF platform Nissan developed with Renault. Some were built in Kyushu, and from August 2014 to March 2020 Renault Samsung built them in Busan, South Korea. The 2014 launched with a 170-horsepower 2.5 four and Nissan's next-generation Xtronic CVT. A hybrid joined in January 2017 in limited numbers.

This generation has the most complaints: 3,291 over seven model years. On the 2014-2018 cars, 481 list the power train. Nissan's response was a warranty extension, not a recall. Starting June 1, 2022, CVT coverage on 2014-2018 Rogues and the 2015 Rogue Select grew from five years or 60,000 miles to seven years or 84,000 miles. Covered parts include the torque converter, the control valve body and the cooler kit, plus reprogramming of the transmission computer. The bulletin doesn't say when the seven years start counting, and it tells dealers to verify coverage for the specific VIN. So have a Nissan dealer run yours before you pay for a repair.

On the 2017-2019 cars, brakes overtake the transmission. On the 2018, 245 of 668 complaints list the service brakes and 106 list forward collision avoidance.

Other recalls in this generation: fuel pumps on 2014 cars that can fail and stall the engine (15V197 and 16V149), a 2015 shifter that could leave Park without the brake pedal pressed (15V775), an under-dash connector on 2014-2016 cars that corrodes from water and salt in the driver's footwell (22V024), and a folding key on 2014-2020 cars that can collapse while driving and shut the engine off (23V093).

2021 on: the VC-Turbo years (T33)

Smyrna started building the new Rogue on September 22, 2020. The 2021 kept a 2.5 four, now the PR25DD at 181 horsepower. For 2022 every US Rogue switched to a 1.5-liter three-cylinder VC-Turbo engine, the KR15DDT, assembled at Nissan's Decherd, Tennessee plant. The 2023 spec sheet rates it at 201 horsepower.

The engine complaints came with it. The 2023 has more complaints than any other Rogue year, 732, and 236 of them name the engine. NHTSA opened an investigation into KR15DDT and KR20DDET engine failures on December 13, 2023, according to Wikipedia. Three recalls followed:

  • 25V437: 2021-2024 Rogues with the VC-Turbo. The engine bearings may have manufacturing defects.
  • 26V080: 2023-2025 Rogues with the 1.5. Heat can break down the engine oil until the bearings seize.
  • 26V081: 2024-2025 Rogues with the 1.5. Gears in the electronic throttle body can break, cutting drive power.

NHTSA's notices for the two bearing recalls warn that a failed bearing can breach the engine block and release hot oil.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Each row counts the complaints filed with NHTSA under the Rogue name for that model year, and the recall campaigns NHTSA lists for it. A campaign that covers several years appears in each of them. One stray complaint filed as a 2007 model is not in the table. "Part named most" skips NHTSA's "unknown or other" category.

Repair it, or sell it as it sits?

None of the sources behind this page give a repair price for a Rogue, so start with a written quote for your car. Then look up what the same Rogue, at the same mileage, sells for when it runs. When the quote gets near that figure, the repair stops making sense.

  • Transmission gone on a 2008-2013: the 10-year extension on Nissan's owners site stops at 2010 models, and we found no Nissan extension for the 2011-2013 cars. Have a dealer check the VIN before you pay. The bad transmission guide walks through symptoms and typical costs.
  • CVT shudder or slipping on a 2014-2018: ask a Nissan service desk whether the extension still covers your VIN before any money changes hands.
  • Knocking or a dead engine on a 2022-2025: check 25V437, 26V080 and 26V081 against the VIN, then ask a Nissan dealer what it will do for an engine that has already failed. Blown engine covers how to weigh it.
  • Windows, seats or an AWD light acting up on a 2014-2016: that pattern matches the corroded connector in recall 22V024. NHTSA's recall file says dealers will replace both connectors free of charge.

How a dead Rogue gets sold

You don't have to fix it or take anything off it. Sell the whole car as it sits.

  1. Get an offer online or by calling (877) 421-6008. Give the year, the mileage and what went wrong.
  2. Say where the Rogue sits and whether its wheels turn freely. A locked-up CVT or a seized engine is fine to mention; it tells the driver what to bring.
  3. Leave the parts on. Wheels, battery and catalytic converter stay with the car. If something is already gone, say so when you ask.
  4. Have the title in your name for pickup. Lost it? Read selling a junk car without a title first. Plate rules differ from state to state; after you sell sorts them out.

Questions people ask

Which Rogue model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2023 leads with 732. Behind it come the 2018 (668), the 2013 (610), the 2017 (599) and the 2015 (553). Those counts come from NHTSA's complaint file as downloaded on October 10, 2026. A Rogue from the last two or three years has had less time on the road to collect them.
Is the CVT on a 2014-2018 Rogue still under warranty?
Only while it is inside 84 months or 84,000 miles of coverage. Whichever limit arrives first ends it. Nissan's extension took effect June 1, 2022 and also covers the 2015 Rogue Select. The bulletin doesn't say when that clock starts for your car, so ask a Nissan dealer to look up the VIN before paying for a transmission.
Which recalls cover the 1.5-liter VC-Turbo engine?
Three. Recall 25V437 is about engine bearings on 2021-2024 Rogues with the VC-Turbo. Recall 26V080 covers 2023-2025 cars where heat can break down the oil until the bearings seize. Recall 26V081 is for throttle body gears that can break on 2024-2025 cars. NHTSA's lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls tells you, by VIN, which of the three your Rogue is in.
Will you take a Rogue with a seized engine or a CVT that won't move?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention the no-start or the stuck transmission in your offer request.
