Selling a Nissan NX1600 or NX2000 that no longer runs
Nissan sold the NX in the US for just three model years, 1991 through 1993. If yours has stopped running, you can sell it whole and leave it exactly as it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

NX1600 or NX2000?
Both are coupes on Nissan's B13 platform, the one under the Sentra of those years, and both came from the Oppama plant in Yokosuka, Japan. Most were sold with T-tops; the rest were hardtops. The body was designed at Nissan Design International in San Diego, under its president Jerry Hirshberg. Wikipedia calls the NX a loose evolution of the Pulsar NX that Nissan sold from 1987 to 1990.
| NX1600 | NX2000 | |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | The standard 1.6-liter Sentra | The 2.0-liter Sentra SE-R |
| Engine | GA16DE four, 110 hp | SR20DE four, 141 hp |
| Transmissions | 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic | 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic |
In the showroom it went up against the Mazda MX-3, the Isuzu Impulse, the Toyota MR2 and the Honda Civic del Sol. The NX2000 also had a racing side. The Sports Car Club of America classed it in Showroom Stock B for 1992, and in 2011 an NX coupe with a 2.0-liter SR20 set a Bonneville land speed record in class G/PRO at 174.525 mph.
What owners reported to NHTSA
The file is short. There are 13 complaints in all: 6 on the 1991, 7 on the 1992 and none on the 1993. They report 1 crash, 2 fires and 1 injury, and no deaths.
Seat belts are the component named most, on 6 of the 13, and 7 of the 13 write-ups mention a seat belt or buckle. The engine and its cooling system come next with 2. Two complaints mention a fire.
The belts are also where the NX's only recall sits. Recall 97V071, filed in April 1997, covers 36,000 cars from 1991-1992. The release buttons in the rear seat belt buckles were not made to specification, and in hot weather the plastic welds holding each button to its spring can fail. The tongue may then catch only partway, or the belt may not latch at all. The recall carries no warning to stop driving or to park outside.
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls | Component named most |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1991 | 6 | 1 | Seat belts |
| 1992 | 7 | 1 | Seat belts |
| 1993 | 0 | 0 | None filed |

Fix it or sell it?
NHTSA's file says little about engines and gearboxes here: of the 13 NX complaints, 2 name the engine and its cooling system and 1 names the power train. Price the repair in writing and compare it with what a running NX of that year sells for. If it has been parked for a long stretch, a car sitting for years covers what to check before anyone tries to start it.
Selling your NX whole
Say which one you have, NX1600 or NX2000, whether it's a T-top or a hardtop, the mileage and what's wrong. If it's a T-top, keep both roof panels with the car. Then get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
When the car is collected, you'll need its title and your photo ID. If the title went missing, start with selling a junk car with no title, and see after you sell for the plates.
Questions people ask
- How do I tell an NX1600 from an NX2000?
- By the engine. The NX1600 has the 1.6-liter GA16DE from the standard Sentra, rated at 110 horsepower. The NX2000 has the 2.0-liter SR20DE from the Sentra SE-R, rated at 141.
- Was the Nissan NX ever recalled?
- Once. Recall 97V071, filed in April 1997, covers 36,000 NX coupes from 1991-1992 whose rear seat belt buckles can fail to latch fully in hot weather.
- Will you buy an NX with a dead engine?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Leave the T-top panels with the car, and mention anything that has already been removed.
