Selling a dead or junk car in Gastonia
We could not find Gastonia's own junk-car ordinance online, so this page leans on the state statute that North Carolina cities draw from, and Gastonia may layer rules of its own on top. One Gastonia fact is firm: Gaston County appears on the state's emissions list, so many dead cars here face an emissions test as well as the safety check before they can be re-registered. You can skip the tests. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

What G.S. 160A-303 hands a city
Through G.S. 160A-303, Gastonia and other cities in the state may ban abandoned cars on streets and on public or private land, and may haul off the junked or abandoned ones. A car left on someone's property past two hours without that owner's okay counts as abandoned under the statute's city rule.
The statute's junked car is an abandoned one that also:
- sits partly dismantled or wrecked
- cannot propel itself
- is more than five years old with a value under $100, or under $500 when Gastonia's ordinance picks that number
- lacks a current plate
Those dollar figures are a legal yardstick, not what a car sells for.
Landowners get a shield too. Unless the car has been declared a hazard to health or safety, the city leaves it on private ground until the landowner asks in writing. A hearing must be offered.
The state's own tag
G.S. 20-137.10 runs a parallel process. State officers may tag a derelict or abandoned car; five days after the tag date, an unmoved car is taken off for sale. Its last registered owner and any lienholder hear about it in writing. Below $100 in value, with an owner nobody can locate, the sale needs no more notice.
Gaston County inspections
Statewide, a car passes safety inspection inside 90 days before renewal. Gaston County piles an emissions test on top. Cars aged 20 or more are emissions-exempt, as are some light-duty cars newer than 3 years or with under 70,000 miles. Failed inspection or rust is for a car caught between a failed test and a lapsed tag.
Gastonia titles and plates
NCDMV issues titles through plate agencies and by mail; Gaston County's offices do not. We checked 246 N. New Hope Road, Suite 239, roughly 2 miles northeast of downtown Gastonia as the crow flies. Others may operate in the county.
In Gastonia, as anywhere in the state, a notary witnesses the seller's title signature. Selling in Gastonia also means listing all the damage you know about on Form MVR-181, the Damage Disclosure Statement, so the buyer sees it. After the sale, take the tags off. Return them, in person or by post, while coverage is still in force, unless another car you own will carry them.

Getting an offer
Ring (877) 421-6008 or send the form: the car's year and badge, the mileage, if it fires up, and title status. You sell the whole car as it sits, even one that won't run. A truck can come to a Gastonia driveway, side street or repair bay.
Questions people ask
- Does Gastonia publish a junk-car ordinance?
- Not one we could find online, so this page does not quote it. North Carolina lets cities adopt their own junked and abandoned car rules, and Gastonia may have done so. Ask the city about any deadline before relying on one.
- When is a car junked under North Carolina's city statute?
- Under G.S. 160A-303 it covers an abandoned Gastonia car that is wrecked or partly taken apart, won't run under its own power, lacks a current plate, or is more than five years old and valued below $100 ($500 when the ordinance sets that).
- Is Gastonia allowed to remove a junk car from my driveway?
- State law keeps Gastonia from hauling a car off private land until the landowner asks in writing, except when it has been declared a health or safety hazard. A hearing has to be offered.
- Do Gastonia cars get emissions tests?
- Yes. Gaston County is on North Carolina's emissions list, and safety inspection is yearly statewide. Cars aged 20 or more skip the emissions part.
