Selling a junk car in Huntersville

Huntersville's town code was not online when we looked, and the plate agency we checked is about 13 miles south in Charlotte. A Huntersville seller, then, works mainly from state law and may face one drive into the city for paperwork. The town may still keep junk-car rules we could not read. When the car is finished, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Ten days and twelve years

G.S. 20-137.7 sets North Carolina's baseline definitions. A car counts as an "abandoned vehicle" once it has sat illegally on public or private ground for more than 10 days, with no okay from the person who owns or runs that spot.

"Derelict" is a separate label. It reaches a car that:

  • carries expired registration and has an owner who is gone
  • is missing major parts
  • has had its ID numbers stripped
  • has been disclaimed by its owner
  • is older than 12 years and has no current license

Five days after a tag

G.S. 20-137.10 lets state officers tag a derelict or abandoned car. Unmoved five days past the tag date, it is pulled away for sale, and its last registered owner and lienholders are told in writing. A car valued below $100 whose owner cannot be traced may be sold with nothing further sent.

Town and county powers

G.S. 160A-303 allows a town to ban abandoned vehicles from streets and from public or private land, and to tow off junked ones. Counties hold matching power within their own areas under G.S. 153A-132. Either way, owners get a hearing. Any Huntersville or Mecklenburg rule would sit inside that frame.

Paper deadlines keep running while the car sits. An expired Huntersville sticker still works for driving through the 15th of the following month, up to midnight. Past that, late fees run $15 for under a month, $20 at one to two months, then $25. Mecklenburg also demands an emissions test besides the annual safety check, unless the car's age or mileage makes it exempt. Car sitting for years covers it.

Huntersville paperwork

NCDMV issues every North Carolina title, using plate agencies and mail. One we looked up is 3250 Wilkinson Blvd., Suite G, Charlotte, roughly 13 miles south of downtown Huntersville in a straight line. Mecklenburg may hold others.

A notary must witness the Huntersville seller signing the title. Joint owners each sign before the notary, with a photocopy of the second owner's license or ID attached. Once sold, pull the plates and hand them in before canceling coverage unless another car takes them. If the old car lingers on your registration record, NCDMV's notarized Form MVR-46F asks to have it removed. See after you sell.

Questions people ask

Has Huntersville posted its own junk-car rule online?
We did not find the town code online. Towns and counties in North Carolina may pass their own junked and abandoned car ordinances, so Huntersville could have rules this page does not cover.
What makes a car derelict in North Carolina?
G.S. 20-137.7 covers several cases, including a car whose registration ran out and whose owner left, a car missing major parts or ID numbers, a car the owner says is not theirs, and a car older than 12 years with no current license.
My sold car still shows on my registration. What do I file?
Sold a Huntersville car that NCDMV still lists under you? Huntersville owners file Form MVR-46F, the notarized "Affidavit for Removal of Registered Vehicle from Vehicle Registration Files."
What does a lapsed tag cost while the car sits?
In Huntersville an expired sticker stays good until midnight on the 15th of the following month. Huntersville owners then owe $15 late if it is less than a month, $20 for one to two months, and $25 for two months or more.
