Selling a junk or dead car in Ardmore

The rule in Ardmore's code most likely to catch a dead car is a parking clock, not a junk-car law. From 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., a car can't stay on a city street over 30 minutes. A car that will not start, pushed to the curb in front of the house, breaks that rule every night. We buy whole non-running and junk cars from Ardmore. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The 30-minute rule after 1 a.m.

Section 28-22.3 says: "No person shall park a vehicle on any street for a period of time longer than thirty (30) minutes between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. of any day, except physicians on emergency calls."

Section 28-35.6 covers what follows. The officer who finds the car "shall take its registration number" and "shall conspicuously affix to such vehicle a traffic citation."

Private land: the code we saw is silent

Ardmore's parking chapter is what we read. Nothing in it addresses a wrecked or dead car sitting on a private lot. The city may still have one, so treat this as unconfirmed. Until you know, state law is the baseline:

  • A car on a road or other public land breaks the law once officers find it has sat 48 hours and the owner shows no plan to move it.
  • If a landowner thinks a car has been left on the land for 48 hours or more, a licensed Class AA wrecker can haul it off with a Tow Request and Authorization Form.
  • Once a car is impounded, officers tell the Department of Public Safety within 72 hours. DPS then mails the owner within 3 days.

The state process sits on top of whatever Ardmore adds, not in place of it.

The Carter County title office we checked

Carter County's office at 25 A St. NW sits roughly 2 miles south of central Ardmore, as the crow flies. No phone number was listed where we looked. Other Carter County offices may exist, and Service Oklahoma's own counters and private tag agencies can handle a title as well.

Since July 1, 2025, Service Oklahoma issues titles electronically. A paper title you already hold stays valid until the next sale. If your car's title is electronic, Form 718 replaces it: a printed bill of sale you sign before a notary. With a paper title, you complete the assignment on the back and swear it before a notary.

Plates and the two-day step

Your plate stays with you. State law keeps it in the registered owner's name, and it does not pass to the buyer. If you buy another vehicle in the same registration class, Service Oklahoma can switch the plate over to it.

One of you, seller or buyer, then has two business days to log the change with Service Oklahoma. Filing Form 773 on top of that is your choice, at $10. After you sell walks through the rest.

An older car with no title

Lost the title on a dead car older than 10 model years? Oklahoma lets it change hands on a certificate of ownership instead. Within 30 days, the seller mails a copy and a $4 fee to Service Oklahoma or a licensed operator. More on that in junk car with no title.

Questions people ask

Is overnight curb parking a problem for a broken-down car in Ardmore?
Not between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. for longer than 30 minutes. Section 28-22.3 bars parking on any street past that limit in those hours, with an exception only for physicians on emergency calls. An Ardmore officer who finds a car in violation notes its registration number and puts a citation on the car.
Does Ardmore have a junk-car ordinance?
Our read of the Ardmore code turned up parking sections, not a junk-car rule. That does not mean the city has none. State law still applies: a car left on a road or public property for 48 hours can be treated as abandoned.
Where do I deal with a title in Carter County?
We checked one office, at 25 A St. NW, roughly 2 miles south of central Ardmore as the crow flies. Service Oklahoma counters and the tag agencies it licenses can do title work too.
After you sell a car in Ardmore, who keeps the plate?
No. In Oklahoma the plate stays in the seller's name. You take it off and can have it moved to another car of the same class.
