Got a dead car in Edmond?

Edmond's junk-vehicle rule can apply to an intact car. A lapsed tag alone qualifies. Section 10.18.040 names a "vehicle with an expired license tag" right next to wrecked, junked and nonoperating cars. If yours has stopped running and the tag has lapsed too, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

The 72-hour rule in Section 10.18.040

The code's opening line covers anyone "in charge or control of any property within the City, whether as owner, tenant, occupant, lessee, or otherwise." None of them may let a "partially dismantled, nonoperating, wrecked, or junked, or discarded vehicle or vehicle with an expired license tag" stay on the property.

Notice comes first. The code calls for "notice in writing or notice posted on a vehicle," and ties it to a car left on the property "longer than seventy-two hours." Exempt: "a vehicle in an enclosed building," cars that a lawfully run business genuinely needs, and anything held at a city storage depository.

The street is no safer. Section 10.18.030 says no one shall leave a nonoperating or wrecked car, or one "with an expired license tag," on "any street or highway within the City."

Paved parking only

Edmond has a rule many towns lack. Section 10.68.025 bars parking "upon any real property in the City of Edmond except upon an artificial surface." The code describes concrete "four inches (4″) thick minimum," wide and long enough for the whole vehicle. Two exceptions apply: older surfaces that are legally non-conforming, and vehicles "parked completely to the rear of the front wall of the main building." So pushing a dead car onto the front lawn to clear the driveway can create a second problem.

Boots, tows and old tickets

Under Section 10.68.070, the city can tow a car left disabled where it blocks traffic, or one parked in a fire lane or tow-away zone. Removing a boot costs $50, which the code spells out as "Fifty Dollars." After "seventy-two (72) hours without release, the City shall cause the vehicle to be impounded." The owner is "solely and fully responsible" for the impound and storage costs. If you have unpaid parking citations, the car stays in the lot until they are disposed of. Our registration hold page covers tickets tied to a car you want to sell.

Title paperwork from Edmond

Edmond sits in Oklahoma County, and the county office we looked up is downtown in Oklahoma City at 320 Robert S. Kerr Ave., (405) 713-1300, around 15 miles southwest of central Edmond as the crow flies. Service Oklahoma and its tag agencies process titles too.

State law puts a notary at the signing. Cars from model year 2011 on need an odometer reading, normally written on the title itself, otherwise on Form 729. Filing Form 773 is your choice: $10, through OkCARS or a tag agency, and the sale shows up in Service Oklahoma's records. Any title printed from January 2006 onward has a detachable Notice of Transfer stub, handled just like Form 773.

Take the plate off

Under 47 O.S. 1112.2, the seller removes the plate and keeps it, because Oklahoma plates do not pass between owners. Forget it, and the statute tells a buyer who discovers your still-valid tag to pull it off and destroy it.

Questions people ask

Can an expired tag alone get an Edmond car flagged?
It can be. Section 10.18.040 lists a vehicle with an expired license tag alongside wrecked and nonoperating cars, and Section 10.18.030 bars leaving one on any street in the city.
Can a dead car legally stay on my front lawn in Edmond?
Usually not. Section 10.68.025 requires parking on an artificial surface, such as concrete at least four inches thick, unless the vehicle sits completely behind the front wall of the main building or the surface is legally non-conforming.
What if the city booted my car?
Edmond charges $50 to release a boot. If the car stays immobilized for 72 hours without release, the city impounds it, and outstanding parking citations must be settled before an impounded car is released.
Do I have to file Form 773 when I sell?
It is optional. The $10 Form 773 just logs the sale with Service Oklahoma, via OkCARS or any tag agency.
