Sell your junk Pontiac Aztek whole

The fuel system is the second thing Aztek owners complain about most, 75 of 566 complaints to NHTSA. And the recall that covers the most Aztek model years, 07V349, replaced the fuel tank on 2001-2004 models because a valve in it could crack.

Problems by model year

The Aztek had one generation. Wikipedia says it was built from July 2000 to December 2004 at GM's Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico, on the same line as the Buick Rendezvous. Power came from a 3.4-liter LA1 V6 through a 4T65-E four-speed automatic, driving the front wheels or all four. Sales peaked in 2002 at 27,793. It ended after the 2005 model year and was replaced by the Torrent.

Complaints below are owner reports logged by NHTSA through October 10, 2026. Each recall's vehicle number spans its full campaign, and most of these reached other GM vehicles, too.

2001: the launch year carries the most

The first model year holds 216 complaints, more than a third of the total. Electrical and fuel system tie at 27 each, and hydraulic brakes follow with 22. It also has the most crashes reported, 14, and the most injuries, 18.

Five recall campaigns touch the 2001. Two involve the passenger air bag. Under 01V026, some inflators were built without the right amount of the gas-making charge (38 vehicles). Under 02V329, some bags were missing a check valve pin (272 vehicles). Recall 01V383 is about a second-row seat latch anchor wire; its description names minivans, so most of its 75,816 vehicles aren't Azteks. Recall 03V250, on 2001-2003 models, only added an owner's manual page explaining the child seat anchor symbols. And 07V349 is the fuel tank.

2002-2003: suspension, then fuel

The suspension leads the 2002 with 18 of 121 complaints. On the 2003, fuel system takes over with 21 of 128, electrical has 19, and the 2003 also has 6 fires reported. Recall 03V052 covered 2003 models whose steering column intermediate shaft was too thin; dealers inspected and replaced it.

2004-2005: stalls and electrical

Electrical leads both of the last two years. On the 2004, recall 05V157 says contamination on ignition relay contacts can raise resistance, disturb signals to the engine computer and cause stalls at any time. The notice gives phone numbers for both Pontiac and Buick, so its 34,186 vehicles include more than Azteks. A small recall, 03V454, also checked some 2004 fuel tanks for a weak weld at the inlet check valve. The 2005 has just 34 complaints and no recall.

Complaints and recalls by model year

NHTSA owner reports by Aztek year, tallied October 10, 2026. Later Azteks have had less time on the road for owners to file. A campaign can span several years.

Is it worth fixing?

Two free checks come first. Run your Aztek's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup to see whether the fuel tank or ignition relay work was ever done. Then ask a GM dealer about anything still open.

Past that, it's math: the shop estimate on one side, the price a working Aztek of your year and drive fetches on the other. Electrical faults can eat hours in diagnosis alone; electrical problems covers how to weigh that. Selling an SUV that won't move works the same as a car, and junk truck or SUV has the details.

Selling the Aztek whole

  1. Jot down the VIN, the odometer miles, the drive type and the problem.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe its spot: driveway, side yard, repair shop lot. Add whether it rolls. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it in one piece. Leave the battery, wheels and any camping gear that came with it. Tell us about anything removed.
  5. Keep the title and an ID nearby for when the truck arrives. If a loan is still on it, see still owe on the loan.

More Pontiacs: the Torrent, Montana and Vibe.

Questions people ask

Which Aztek year has the most complaints?
The first one. The 2001 has 216 of the Aztek's 566 owner complaints in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 data, and five recall campaigns. The 2005 has the fewest, 34.
What was the Aztek fuel tank recall?
Campaign 07V349 covers 2001-2004 models. The fuel tank inlet check valve could fracture, from variations in manufacturing or from high outside temperatures. Dealers replaced the fuel tank. A separate, smaller recall, 03V454, checked 2004 tanks for a failed weld at the same valve.
My 2004 Aztek stalls at random. Is there a recall?
There is one that fits that symptom. Campaign 05V157 covers 2004 models whose ignition relay contacts can get contaminated, which can disrupt signals to the engine computer and cause stalls at any time. Dealers replaced the relay. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you pick up an Aztek that doesn't run?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
