Sell your junk or broken Pontiac Vibe
Air bags appear in 998 of the 1,862 owner complaints on the Pontiac Vibe in NHTSA's file, more than half, by our October 10, 2026 count. The 2009 alone has 350. Wikipedia notes that in October 2014 the Vibe was recalled over faulty Takata air bags, and the recall list since then is long.

The Vibe was built by NUMMI in Fremont, California, as a twin of the Toyota Matrix. That is why most of its recalls were filed by Toyota. If yours is worn out, damaged or not worth the repair, sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Two generations of Vibe
Dates and engines below are from Wikipedia. The EPA lists the Vibe for 2003-2010.
First generation, 2003-2008 model years
Built from January 2002 to February 2008, with a 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE or 1.8-liter 2ZZ-GE four. Gearboxes were 5- and 6-speed manuals and 4-speed automatics, including one for all-wheel drive. Wikipedia says the GT and all-wheel-drive trims were dropped for 2007 because of poor sales and new federal emissions rules.
These years hold 1,276 complaints. Air bags lead from the 2004 on; on the 2003, visibility leads with 71. The recalls:
- Air bags. Recall 13V029 covers 2003-2004 air bag circuits that can short. Recall 15V043 replaces the air bag control module on 2003-2004 cars. Recall 18V883 covers passenger inflators on 2003-2007 Vibes, and 19V627 replaces passenger air bags already swapped under an earlier recall on 2005-2008 cars. Two more cover 2003-2007 cars (15V285 and 15V286) and two cover the 2008 (16V127 and 16V128).
- Engine control module. Recall 10V387 is a GM filing for the Vibe alone: 161,754 front-drive 2005-2008 cars with the 1ZZ-FE. Wikipedia quotes the notice: a crack in the module can bring on the check engine light, harsh shifting, stalling or a no-start.
- Door glass. Recall 08V162 puts new front door glass bolts in 2003-2004 Vibes with power windows, since the old ones could work loose and the glass could come apart. Its 662,178 vehicles include Corollas and Corolla Matrixes.
Second generation, 2009-2010 model years
Built from February 2008 to August 2009 with a 1.8-liter 2ZR-FE or 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE four. Wikipedia says production ended in August 2009 as GM dropped Pontiac and NUMMI closed. These two years have 585 complaints, 527 of them on the 2009.
Air bags lead again: 350 on the 2009. Recall 14V168 covers the driver air bag on 2009-2010 cars, and passenger inflator recalls follow (16V340, 17V006, 18V024 and 18V025). Vehicle speed control is second on the 2009 with 44. Recall 10V018, filed by GM for 70,806 2009-2010 Vibes, adds a reinforcement bar to the accelerator pedal so it moves smoothly. Wikipedia says these years were also part of Toyota's 2009-2010 unintended acceleration recalls, and of a fall 2009 floor mat recall. Power window master switch recalls reach the 2009 (12V491) and 2009-2010 (15V689).
The Toyota-filed air bag and window campaigns count Corollas, Matrixes, Lexus models and others with the Vibe, so their vehicle totals are not Vibe totals.
Complaints and recalls by year
Vibe figures come from owner complaints NHTSA had by October 10, 2026. The crash column counts the complaints that mention a crash. The air bag campaigns often span four or five model years, so each counts in every year it covers.
| Model year | Complaints | Air bag complaints | Crashes | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2002 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 |
| 2003 | 298 | 65 | 27 | 8 |
| 2004 | 266 | 104 | 18 | 7 |
| 2005 | 301 | 171 | 10 | 5 |
| 2006 | 177 | 117 | 6 | 5 |
| 2007 | 171 | 112 | 13 | 5 |
| 2008 | 63 | 47 | 3 | 4 |
| 2009 | 527 | 350 | 23 | 9 |
| 2010 | 58 | 31 | 5 | 8 |
After air bags, the most-named components overall are visibility (155), power train (97), vehicle speed control (68), engine and engine cooling (65) and the electrical system (61). The 2010's low count partly reflects a short production run and fewer years with owners.
Fix it first, or sell?
- Run the VIN. Use nhtsa.gov/recalls. With this many air bag campaigns, an open one is common. Our open recall guide explains selling with one.
- Stalling, rough shifts, light on? On a 2005-2008 two-wheel-drive car, ask about recall 10V387 before you pay for a diagnosis. Otherwise see check engine light.
- Engine or transmission gone? Compare the quote with what a running Vibe sells for. When repairs cost more than the car walks through it.
Selling a Vibe whole
- List the VIN, mileage and faults, open recalls included.
- Request an offer on this page or ring (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the hatchback sits and if it can roll. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it complete; parts already pulled should be on your list.
- Our driver just needs your Vibe title and your ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance, and selling with no title helps if the title is lost.

Questions people ask
- Which Vibe model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2009 leads with 527 in our October 10, 2026 count, 350 of them about air bags. The 2005 (301), 2003 (298) and 2004 (266) follow. The 2010 sits at 58, helped by having the fewest years on the road.
- Who handles recalls on a Pontiac Vibe?
- Most Vibe recalls were filed by Toyota, because the Vibe shared parts with the Corolla Matrix. The recall notices say General Motors notifies the Pontiac Vibe owners. nhtsa.gov/recalls lists open campaigns by VIN.
- My Vibe stalls and the check engine light is on. Is that a recall?
- It can be. Recall 10V387 reaches front-drive 2005-2008 Vibes with the 1ZZ-FE, where the engine computer may have been made wrong. Wikipedia quotes the notice: a crack can bring on the check engine light, harsh shifting, stalling or a no-start. Check the VIN first.
- Will you buy a Vibe with an open air bag recall?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention the open campaign in your request.
