Selling an old or dead Pontiac Bonneville
On the 1998 Bonneville, 183 of 277 complaints owners filed with NHTSA name the engine and engine cooling, counted as of October 10, 2026. No other Bonneville year comes close: the next highest count for that component is 57, on the 1999. The same years sit in recall 04V090, which replaced leak-prone fuel pressure regulators on 1998-2000 cars with the 3800 V6 (L36).

A Bonneville is at least 20 years old now, and the 1980s cars are past 40. Once one quits or needs repairs that top its value, sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Tallied by us from NHTSA's owner-complaint download of October 10, 2026. The fire column counts complaints with the fire box ticked. A recall that reaches two model years is listed under both. The sparse 1984-1991 years share a row. Not one Bonneville complaint in the file notes a death.
| Model year | Complaints | Fires | Recalls | Most-named component |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1984-1991 | 130 | 4 | 1, 0, 1, 3, 0, 1, 0, 1 by year | Service brakes (1989-1991) |
| 1992 | 113 | 5 | 3 | Service brakes (43) |
| 1993 | 138 | 11 | 1 | Service brakes (38) |
| 1994 | 88 | 9 | 0 | Electrical system (15) |

| 2004 | 28 | 1 | 0 | Electrical system (10) |
| 2005 | 27 | 1 | 0 | Air bags (12) |
Across all years, engine and engine cooling leads (483), then the electrical system (227), hydraulic service brakes (162), steering (146), air bags (115) and power train (101). Late Bonnevilles also have had fewer years on the road than the 1990s cars, which keeps their counts down.
What went wrong, by generation
Wikipedia lists four Bonneville generations inside these model years. The 1982-1986 cars were mid-size and rear-wheel drive. From 1987 the Bonneville was a full-size car again.
1984-1986 (seventh generation)
Only 5 complaints are on file. Recall 89V102 covers a cruise control servo bushing on 1984 cars that can slip out of place and raise engine speed without warning; its 1,755,897 vehicles span many GM models. On the 1986 Bonneville, recall 86V056 put in new headlight switches, since the old ones could flicker or quit.
1987-1991 (eighth generation)
The 1987 has three recalls. One covers an inline fusible link that may melt down and cause a fire (87V135, 479,715 vehicles across GM models). Another covers a headlamp circuit breaker that can overheat on low beam (87V103), and a third an accelerator cable that can bind (88V080). Brakes lead the complaints on 1989-1991.
1992-1999 (ninth generation, 1,300 complaints)
These eight years hold two-thirds of all Bonneville complaints. Brakes lead the 1992 and 1993. From 1995, engine and engine cooling takes over, and it peaks on the 1998.
Recalls for these years:
- 96V116, 1996: a backfire during starting can break the upper intake manifold; dealers update the engine computer.
- 94V190, 1995: a lighting control module can lose the headlamps and parking lamps.
- 96V015, 1992-1993: transmission cooler lines that can separate in the cold under heavy load.
- 99V089, 1999: cars with the 4T65E automatic, where a retaining clip in the shift linkage gets a new spring-type fastener.
- 04V090, 1998-2000: the 3800 V6 fuel pressure regulators. Its 910,873 vehicles include other GM cars with that engine.
2000-2005 (tenth generation, 541 complaints)
Visibility leads the 2000 with 50 and steering follows with 38. Steering leads 2001-2003. Recall 00V114 covers internal leaks in the ABS hydraulic modulator on 2000 cars. The 2002-2003 cars share a driver air bag inflator recall (02V222). Recall 03V238 replaced a fuel tank pressure sensor on 2002-2003 Bonneville SSEi cars, in a 102,212-vehicle campaign that also covers Cadillac and Oldsmobile models. Wikipedia names the Pontiac G8 as the successor.
Fix, keep, or sell?
- Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Recalls on the 3800 V6, the air bag and the fuel tank sensor reach the later cars.
- Coolant on the ground or a hot gauge? On a 1995-1999 car that's the most common complaint area. The head gasket and overheating guide helps you weigh it.
- Lights and gauges going dark? Electrical complaints run through every generation. See electrical problems.
- An 1980s car? Some buyers see an old Bonneville as a project. Our old project car guide covers when that matters.
Getting it picked up
- Dig out the title, and read the VIN and odometer.
- Request an offer here, or phone (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the parking spot and say whether the big sedan rolls and its tires still hold air. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep the converter, wheels and battery on the car; note anything a previous owner removed.
- When the truck arrives, sign the title across and let the driver check your ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance, and selling with no title helps if the title is lost.

Questions people ask
- Which Bonneville model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1998 has 277 in our October 10, 2026 count, with 183 naming engine and engine cooling. The 1995 has 244 and the 2000 has 214. The 2004 and 2005, at 28 and 27, have also had the fewest years in service.
- Is a 1980s Bonneville worth anything as a junk car?
- It is still a whole car, and we buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. What it is worth depends on what is on it and where it sits. Our junk car value guide explains what moves an offer.
- What does the 1996 intake manifold recall say?
- Recall 96V116 says a backfire while starting the engine can break the upper intake manifold. Dealers update the engine computer, and until then the hood should be shut whenever the engine is started. Its 275,811 vehicles include other GM models.
