Selling a junk or project Pontiac Firebird

Brakes lead the Firebird's NHTSA file. Owners named hydraulic service brakes 117 times across 713 complaints, and most of those come from the last generation. On the 1998 alone, 27 of 74 complaints are about the brakes.

Problems by generation

Wikipedia dates the Firebird from February 23, 1967 to August 30, 2002, always related to the Chevrolet Camaro. The complaint and recall data here starts with the 1984 model year, so it covers part of the third generation and all of the fourth. Complaint totals reflect NHTSA's records on October 10, 2026. A recall's vehicle figure counts every car in its campaign, and most Firebird campaigns took in other GM cars too.

Third generation, 1984-1992: seat belts and fuel hoses

These cars were built in Van Nuys, California. Wikipedia lists a 2.5-liter Pontiac four as the base engine. The Trans Am GTA came with a 5.7-liter V8, but buyers who ordered the 1988 T-tops could only get the 5.0-liter, because the roof couldn't carry the bigger engine's torque.

The complaints here are few, 172 across nine model years, and the pattern is seat belts. From 1985 to 1989, seat belts are the top complaint every year. Recall 85V169 covers 1984-1985 cars whose front shoulder belts may not retract. Recall 90V105 covers belt buckles on 1984-1990 cars, built from plastic with no UV stabilizer, so sun and heat could weaken them. That campaign counts 1,500,000 vehicles.

Fuel hoses come next. Recall 90V115 covers 1988-1989 fuel feed hoses that may pull out of their crimped coupling. Recall 90V114 covers 1990 return hoses that may break. On the 1991 and 1992, fuel system complaints lead, and recall 94V077 covers a filler neck solder joint on those years that can crack or leak. Other campaigns covered 1984-1986 parking brake adjusters that stop working (91V055) and a 1992 shift cable that can separate (92V154).

Fourth generation, 1993-2002: fuel lines, fires, then brakes

Wikipedia says the fourth generation came from Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec. Engines were a 3.4-liter V6, a 3.8-liter V6, and the 5.7-liter LT1 and LT4 V8s. The automatic was a 4L60, then a 4L60E from 1994.

The 1994 stands out: 68 complaints, 11 fires reported, and fuel system as the top component with 18. Recall 93V199 says fuel lines on 1994 cars may have been routed so they touch the AIR check valve, which runs hot enough to melt through a line. With 89, the 1995 tops every other Firebird year for complaints, and it has the most fires reported, 14.

From 1996 on, brakes lead every year in the file except 2002, where engine and cooling edges ahead. The last-year cars also had recall 01V381: welds near the lower driver's side that didn't meet crash standards, fixed with structural rivets.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Taken from NHTSA's owner reports on October 10, 2026. Later cars had fewer years on the road to draw reports, though even a 2002 is now over twenty years old. One campaign may reach across several model years.

Restore, repair or sell?

A Firebird is not just a used car to some buyers, and that can cut both ways. If you've been holding a project for years, be honest about the parts, time and money still between it and the road. The old project car guide walks through that decision.

For a daily-driver Firebird with a failed engine or a brake system that's gone soft, price the repair in writing, then see what a Firebird that drives, with your year and trim, brings. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup as well. If brakes are the issue, see bad or seized brakes.

Selling the Firebird whole

  1. Write down the basics: VIN, mileage, engine, and what doesn't work.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it's stored. Garage, carport, barn or backyard. Flat tires and seized brakes are fine; just say so, so the truck can load it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it complete. If parts were sold off or the car came apart for a restoration, list what's missing.
  5. Find the title and bring ID. If the car was never retitled to you, read car not in your name first.

Questions people ask

What's the most common Firebird complaint?
Hydraulic service brakes, named in 117 of 713 owner complaints in NHTSA's data on October 10, 2026. Fourth-generation cars account for most. On the 1998, 27 of 74 complaints name the brakes.
My Firebird is older than 1984. Is it in this data?
No. The complaint and recall counts here start with the 1984 model year, the first year in the EPA data we used. First- and second-generation cars, 1967-1981, and the earliest third-generation cars aren't covered.
Were there fuel leak recalls on the Firebird?
Several. Recall 94V077 covers 1991-1992 cars whose fuel filler neck solder joint can crack or leak. Recall 93V199 covers 1994 cars with fuel lines that may be routed against a hot AIR check valve. Older campaigns covered fuel feed hoses on 1988-1989 cars and return hoses on the 1990.
Will you buy a Firebird that's been sitting for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Let us know about flat tires or locked wheels.
