Selling a junk or dead Pontiac Sunfire
Owners mostly complain about the Sunfire's electrics. In NHTSA's file the electrical system tops the parts list, with 252 mentions in 1,141 complaints. On the last model year, 2005, it shows up in 58 of 68 complaints. Two separate recalls went after the ignition switch on 1995-2001 cars.

What owners reported, engine era by engine era
Wikipedia lists the Sunfire as a J-body compact built from 1994 to 2005, related to the Chevrolet Cavalier. The engine lineup splits its life in two. Every complaint number below is an owner report to NHTSA, tallied on October 10, 2026. Recall vehicle totals belong to entire campaigns, and most Sunfire campaigns swept in other GM cars as well.
1995-2002: the 2.2 pushrod and the 2.4 twin-cam
Most cars had the 2.2-liter LN2 four. Per Wikipedia, the GT offered a 2.3-liter Quad 4 at first and switched to the 2.4-liter LD9 in 1995. The convertible ended after the 2000 model year.
The 1996 and 1997 together hold 391 complaints, a third of the file. On the 1997, steering leads with 38. Recall 02V286 covers 1996-1998 cars: the lower pinion bearing in the power rack-and-pinion was held by retainer tabs that were not crimped right. That campaign counted 1,159,156 vehicles, minivans included, so the number is not the Sunfire's alone.
Air bags drew 28 complaints on the 1996 and 26 on the 1997. Recall 98V146 had dealers recalibrate the air bag sensing module, because a bag could deploy in a low-speed crash or when something struck the floor pan.
Then there's the ignition switch. Campaign 02V070 (1995-1997) and campaign 04V036 (1998-2001) describe the same fault. If a stubborn engine won't catch and the key stays held at Start, current surges through the switch and can build real heat. Dealers added a relay kit to keep that current off the switch.
The engine and cooling system tops the list on the 1995 (34 complaints), the 1998 (29) and the 2000 (24). Suspension got two campaigns early on. Recall 95V025 covered 1995 front lower control arms built with welds missing. Recall 98V319, on 1996-1997 cars, covered a rear trailing arm bolt that can fatigue and break.
2003-2005: Ecotec only
Wikipedia says the 2.2 and 2.4 were both replaced by the 2.2-liter Ecotec in 2003. It was the only engine from then on.
On the 2003, exterior lighting leads with 21 of 72 complaints. That matches recall 04V524: stop, turn and tail lamps could quit from poor contact between bulb and socket, and dealers greased or replaced the sockets. The 2004 drew just 32 complaints. The 2005 is the electrical year, with no recall campaign at all.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Owner complaints per year, per NHTSA's records on October 10, 2026. A later Sunfire has been around fewer years, so owners have had fewer chances to file on it. The recall column shows campaigns listed against each year, and one campaign can stretch over a handful of years at once.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes reported | Fires reported | Recall campaigns | Named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1994 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Power train |

| 1996 | 201 | 30 | 11 | 7 | Electrical, engine and cooling (32 each) |
| 1997 | 190 | 29 | 8 | 6 | Steering (38) |
| 1998 | 120 | 11 | 1 | 3 | Engine and cooling (29) |

| 2000 | 96 | 13 | 5 | 1 | Engine and cooling (24) |
| 2001 | 66 | 8 | 2 | 1 | Electrical (18) |
| 2002 | 82 | 8 | 3 | 0 | Electrical (17) |
| 2003 | 72 | 4 | 1 | 1 | Exterior lighting (21) |

Repair it or sell it?
First, enter the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 1995-2001 car, ask a Pontiac or Chevrolet dealer whether the ignition relay kit was ever installed.
Then weigh two figures: a shop's written estimate, and the going price for a Sunfire of your year that actually runs. Electrical faults that come and go can take hours just to find, and the electrical problems guide covers what that looks like. An engine that's done on a car this age is often where the math ends. See blown engine for how to weigh it.
How to sell the Sunfire whole
- Note the basics: the VIN, the odometer reading, the trouble, and if the wheels roll.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it sits. Driveway, back lot, garage or a shop's yard all work. Mention whether it rolls; that decides which truck we send. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave every part on. If something has already come off, list it, since a missing part affects the offer.
- At pickup, the title changes hands and the driver checks your photo ID. Lost the title? Read selling with no title first.

Questions people ask
- Which Sunfire model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1996, with 201 owner complaints on NHTSA's books on October 10, 2026. The 1997 is close behind at 190. Owners named the electrical system and the engine and cooling system most often on the 1996.
- Was there a recall on the Sunfire's ignition switch?
- Yes, two. Campaign 02V070 covers 1995-1997 cars and 04V036 covers 1998-2001 cars. If the engine won't start and the key is held in Start for a long time, high current runs through the ignition switch and can build heat. Dealers installed a relay kit. Both campaigns cover many other GM cars too, which is why the vehicle counts run past a million.
- My 2005 Sunfire has electrical faults. Is that common?
- It is what owners reported most on that year. Of 68 complaints on the 2005, 58 name the electrical system. NHTSA lists no recall campaign for the 2005, so there is no free dealer fix to look for.
- Will you take a Sunfire that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say if it rolls, and where it's sitting.
